Change 2

Let's review: Changing a habit of dishonesty:

Step 1: Be honest with yourself. Admit you have a habit.
Step 2: Understand why dishonesty is wrong.
Step 3: Place a high value on being honest.
Step 4: Know why you have the habit. Recognize your fears.
Let's suppose you have a habit of dishonesty. Consider these ideas:

Think. Think about when you are most likely to be dishonest. Are you more honest around some people than around others?

List reasons why you choose to be dishonest:

< >

Perhaps among your reasons are:
* Fear of not being one of the gang
* Fear of losing out as leader of a gang
* Fear of the truth not being believed
* Fear of being punished if the truth is found out
* Fear of changing a familiar habit
* Fear of missing out on the thrills
* Fear of being without what you want or need

* <  >

Suppose you have a habit of dishonesty. Who or what are you most afraid of? Write about it:

< >

If you wanted to change a habit of dishonesty, who or what would you be most afraid of? Write about your fear of changing:

< >

Think. What action might be a fifth step to changing a habit of dishonesty?

< >

Write what might be the outcome of that action:

< >

Consider these ideas for changing a bad habit:

"Cold turkey." This is instant change. For example, some smokers can stop smoking as soon as they decide to stop smoking. They give up their habit "cold turkey."

One day at a time. This is slow, but sure change. For example, some alcoholics succeed in giving up drinking by refusing to drink alcohol one day at a time. If they fail, they start over again.

Step 5: Decide to take action. Take action either "cold turkey" or "one day at a time."

Choose the method you think would work best for you, and write why you think it would work. If you can think of a better method, write about it!

Think. What action might be a sixth and last step to changing a habit of dishonesty?

< >

Write what might be the outcome of that action:

< >

Step 6: To keep at it, seek help from sources who want you to succeed.

List sources who will want you to succeed:

< >

Consider choosing among these sources for help:

Prayer. If you have a faith in God or a spiritual being, pray for help.

Family. Try talking to a family member, whether parent, guardian, or foster parent. A way to start is, "Sis, I have a problem."

Churches and synagogues. Ministers, priests, rabbis, and lay people are there to serve, to help people just like you.

School and community. Teachers and counselors in schools or clinics are there to help people like you solve your problems.

You and yourself. You, yes you are your greatest source of help. Work with your mind and heart; make them best friends. Write down both scary and good thoughts and feelings. And. . .

Smile when you catch yourself doing the right thing.
