This file is just for you! --unless you choose to share it.

The words bad and good have many uses--a bad apple to a bad accident; a good pizza to a good ball game.

Here, the words are used to mean actions that are morally good or bad; that is morally right or wrong.

Perhaps, your list of morally good actions include: being responsible, honest, and truthful, and showing respect for yourself and others.

Morally bad actions would include lying, cheating, stealing, and acts of violence.

Think. Can an action be good or bad without being morally right or wrong?

Yes/No

< >

Can you give an example?

< >

You are right if you think the answer is yes, an action can be good or bad without being morally right or wrong.

Read these examples:

Ellen's bad habit of biting her fingernails may be bad habit, but nail biting is not morally wrong.

Ellen's bad habit of cheating on tests is a bad habit and cheating is morally wrong.

Think/Write

Think. How might a bad habit be changed? --And, do we mean a habit like wearing smelly socks and sneakers? NO! We mean a bad habit like being dishonest--lying, cheating, or stealing.

To change a habit, what do you think would be the very first step?

< >

See if you agree. The first step would be to say to oneself:

I have a morally bad habit of < >.

Being honest with yourself is step 1 to changing a bad habit.

Why do you think lying, cheating, or stealing is wrong? Write what you believe:

< >

See if you agree. People believe dishonesty is wrong because:

* Being dishonest offends God or the spirit within oneself.
* Being dishonest causes harm to oneself and to others.
* Being dishonest breaks down peace and harmony in society.
* (Your own words)

< >

Step 2: Understand why dishonesty is wrong; and step 3: Place a sufficient value on being honest.

How much value do you place on being honest? Do you want to be honest:

always	almost always	when convenient

Write about your choice:

< >

Consider these ideas:

* A goal to be honest always, places a very high value on honesty. It is a good goal for us to work toward.

* Being human, we may fall short of our goals. Being honest, almost always, places a high value on honesty, but our actions do not always measure up.

* Being honest, when convenient, is not good enough. Convenience places a low value on being honest.

Just Suppose

Suppose you have a friend named Mike. Mike values being honest only when it is convenient, or easy to be honest. Another friend, Pat, values being honest, almost always.

Which friend, Mike or Pat, is most likely to develop a habit of being dishonest?

< >

Write why you think so:

< >

Changing a habit of dishonesty:

Step 1: Be honest with yourself. Admit you have a habit.

Step 2: Understand why dishonesty is wrong.

Step 3: Place a high value on being honest.

Think. What action might be a fourth step to changing a habit of dishonesty?

< >

Write what might be the outcome of that action:

< >

Step 4: Know why you have the habit. Recognize your fears.

Look again: Changing a habit of dishonesty:

Step 1: Be honest with yourself. Admit you have a habit.

Step 2: Understand why dishonesty is wrong.

Step 3: Place a high value on being honest.

Step 4: Know why you have the habit. Recognize your fears.
