Honesty 2 - Lying

Maybe, like Character ED, you think: to be honest means to speak truthfully and act fairly.

Do you think you need to feel like doing the right thing to do the right thing? Tell what you think:

Character ED says: "People of character take responsibility for how they speak and act. They speak truthfully and act fairly. They may or may not always feel the way they act."

LIZ: So, I might think or feel one way, but act another way?

ED: Sure. Can you think of an example?

LIZ: Well, I think lying is wrong, but I lied to my mother. I told her I stayed late after school to study. The real reason I stayed late was I had detention.

BUSTER: So? What's so terrible about telling a little lie? You didn't get caught, did you?

LIZ: No...

Do you think Buster's attitude is honest?

Yes/No

< >

Tell why or why not:

< >

Character ED says: "A lie is a lie. A lie is an untruth whether you get caught or don't get caught. Lying is wrong."

"Wrong?" Buster says, "What do you mean, wrong--how could lying be wrong when nobody knows? Liz's mom doesn't even know she lied!"

Maybe you agree with Buster. Is it okay to lie so long as you don't get caught? Tell what you think:

< >

Do you feel cheating and stealing is okay so long as you don't get caught? Tell what you think:

< >

Character ED says: "People of character try to be honest because it is the right way to act. Speaking honestly and acting fairly is positive behavior; it is behavior people the world over value as good."

"Hmmmp!" says Buster. "Tell me why."

Think. What is meant by positive behavior--behavior which is good? Write what you think. If you like, give an example:

< >

Character ED says: "People who will lie, cheat, or steal so long as they don't get caught live in a negative world. They make not getting caught a standard of behavior. They do not value honesty within themselves; they value not getting caught."

Holy cow! That's a lot of "nots." What about you? Do you value being honest inside yourself? Write about it:

< >

"But-but-but" (Liz talking) "I feel bad inside when I tell a lie--I know it's wrong. (At least I won't lie, and say I never tell lies!)"

Character ED says, "Good for Liz! It's good she feels bad when she lies, and good she is honest and admits to lying. Lying is wrong. It's true that nobody's perfect, but we need to try to be the best we can."

How about you? Do you lie:

often	sometimes	almost never	never

< >

Tell how lying makes you feel:

< >

Character ED says: "People of character try to be honest because it is the right way to act. Speaking honestly and acting fairly is positive behavior; it is behavior people the world over value as good."

Suppose you have a habit of lying. Suppose you want to break that bad habit. List things you might do:

< >

Tell which of the habits listed below makes your life easier, and try giving an example:

a. telling the truth
b. lying and not getting caught

< >

Character ED says: "Telling the truth is right and good; it helps us be trustworthy. It makes our lives easier."

"Yeah?" says Buster, "tell me why! --I tell lies real easy."

Tell Buster why Character ED says telling the truth makes life easier:

< >

Ideas to consider:

Telling the truth is positive, or good. Positive actions can produce positive results and help make our lives easier.

Not telling the truth is negative, or bad. Negative actions are harmful, and make our lives harder.

"But", says Liz, "telling the truth is hard!"

What do you think? Is telling the truth hard? Tell what you think:

< >

Character ED says: "At times, telling the truth may be hard--may take courage. But telling the truth is simple, and the stronger the habit, the easier it becomes -- no ifs, ands, or, buts -- just simply tell the truth as you know it."

Liz wants to get her two-cents worth in. "I guess," she says, Telling the truth is simpler than making up lies and worrying about getting caught."

Do you think Liz is right?

Yes/No

< >

Explain your answer. Write about a personal experience to show Liz's thinking as right or wrong. Choose one of these titles:

My Experience with Simple Truth

< >

My Experience with Lying

< >

Lifelong Hint:
People of character take responsibility for how they speak and act. They speak truthfully and act fairly.

People of character try to be honest because it is the right way to act. Speaking honestly and acting fairly is a positive behavior; it is behavior people the world over value as good.
