Maybe, like Character ED, you think to be honest means to speak truthfully and act fairly.

Do you think people are born honest or dishonest? Explain your answer:

< >

Character ED says: "We are not born honest or dishonest. We learn habits of honesty or dishonesty. Lucky for us, a dishonest habit can be changed!"

Read/Think/Write

How Susan Learned

Mama says, "Susan! You bad girl! Did you eat all the cookies?" Three-year-old Susan shakes her curly head no.

Tell why you think Susan shakes her head no:

< >

Think. Mama's voice sounded angry. Small children often say things that are untrue out of fear or shame or a desire to please.

Mama wants Susan to be truthful. How might Mama talk so her three-year-old would not be afraid to say yes? Change Mama's words.

Write what you think Mama should say. Instead of, "Susan! You bad girl! Did you eat all the cookies?" --Mama might say:

< >

Below are words to describe how Mama might speak. Choose those that seem best for speaking to a three-year-old, and tell why:

firm but gentle	half-serious, half-joking angry and accusing

< >

Character ED believes Mama should be firm but gentle. A half-serious, half-joking tone can confuse a three-year-old. An angry, accusing tone can make Susan afraid to tell the truth.

How Susan Learned

Seven-year-old Susan took her best friend's doll. " Susan! You stole that doll, didn't you!" her mother shouted, pointing a threatening finger.

Susan glared. "No" she said, "Ginger gave it to me!"

"Don't you lie to me, you bad girl!"

Think. Mama knows Susan is being untruthful. Do you think it is all right for Susan to lie?

Yes/No

< >

Write why you think it is or is not all right for Susan to lie:

< >

Do you think Susan is a bad girl? Tell why or why not:

< >

Character ED believes that Susan is a fearful child, not a bad child. Stealing and lying are wrong. It is not all right for Susan to steal and lie. Being afraid to tell the truth may be why a person lies; it does not make the lie right.

How Susan Learned

Ten-year-old Susan slips a video into her backpack at the supermarket. "Sir!" says the store clerk, "Your child stole a video. I saw her." Dad clutches Susan's arm until it hurts, and shakes her.

"You stole a video!" he yells. "Don't let me ever catch you stealing again--just wait 'til I get you home... "

"I...I was going to ask you to--to rent it," Susan whimpers.

Think. Do you think Susan has developed a habit of lying?

Yes/No

< >

Write why you think Susan is or is not in the habit of lying, and why:

< >

How Susan Learned

Thirteen-year-old Susan loses her lunch tickets. She's afraid to tell her parents and, instead, takes a five dollar bill from her mother's purse to buy new ones. Her mother doesn't miss the money until a few days later. "I thought I had a five dollar bill," Susan hears her mumble, "Guess I must have spent it on groceries." Susan says nothing. She lets her mother think the money was spent on groceries.

Think. Is Susan being dishonest? Yes/No

Write. If you answered yes, tell what Susan is doing wrong, and why you think so. If you answered no, tell why you think Susan is not being dishonest and your reason for thinking that way:

< >

Character ED believes that like Susan, some children begin to lie out of fear.

Do you think children should tell the truth when they do something wrong, even though they are afraid?

Yes/No

< >

How about you? Is telling the truth sometimes scary? Tell how you feel:

< >

Ideas to consider

* Children who are afraid to admit doing wrong, may continue to lie.

* They may lie to cover up other wrong acts, such as stealing or cheating.

* Instead of learning to tell the truth, they learn to be afraid of getting caught.

Character ED says: "We learn habits of honesty or dishonesty. A learned habit can be unlearned, that is, changed!"
