Welcome to
Character Building Writing Activities
with Character ED, Liz, Buster, others, and You

This set of activities will ask you to think, talk, and write about the business of now--and of a lifetime! Sound tough? Building character, the subject of these activities, is hard work! And, most of us need all the practice we can give it. We will begin with a subject most everyone experiences in one way or another: teasing.

Teasing 1

Think and Write

Think. Think a moment about teasing. Then, in your own words, write your own idea of what it means "to tease":

Do you think it is okay to tease a classmate whom everyone else teases?

Yes/No

< >

Explain your answer:

< >

Suppose someone teases you, and you do not like it. Tell what you would do:

< >

Read this example of teasing:

Louise sat staring out the classroom window. She heard Mr. Martinez talking, but tuned his voice in and out. Mostly out. She thought about a recent drive through the Wisconsin countryside, the picnic on the lake, visiting the cheese factory ...

"...and what work do you think you'd like to do, Louise?" asked Mr. Martinez. Louise snapped to attention.

"Me?...ah...ah...work in a cheese factory!" she stammered, feeling her face get hotter and hotter. The whole class, including her teacher, was laughing at her! What made me say a dumb thing like that? she wondered.

Louise could stand not being popular. Before her "cheese dip" the kids at least left her alone. --Now she couldn't cross the playground without them chanting, "Cheesy Louisy!" She tried to smile, to hold back her tears.

Tell why Louise probably said "a dumb thing like that":

< >

Do you think Louise is a good candidate for teasing? Tell what you think:

< >

List your own words, words that seem to describe Louise. For example, she may be:

shy
sensitive
< >

At school, do you think Louise feels like she belongs?

Yes/No

< >

Explain your answer. Give an example to show how she seems to feel:

< >

Read about another side of Louise, a side her classmates do not get to see:

"Hey, Pokey Pumpkin! Hurry and come downstairs; it's time to go." Louise threw a marker in her book, and took the steps two at a time.

"Ready!" she said, giving her father a hug and a big smile. "How soon will we get there, Dad?"

"About an hour to get out of the city, Pokey Pumpkin. Another hour to get to Grandma's. Louise smiled inside. Will he call me "Pokey Pumpkin" when I'm all grown up? she wondered.

Tell how Louise seems to respond to her father calling her, "Pokey Pumpkin":

< >

Louise tried to hold back the tears when called "Cheesy Louisy" at school; she smiled inside when her father called her "Pokey Pumpkin." Write your ideas on what makes Louise act differently in these two situations:

< >

Consider these ideas:

a. Louise accepts teasing from someone who loves her; she needs to learn how to accept teasing from classmates who may be uncaring.

b. Louise accepts teasing from someone who loves her; her classmates need to learn how to tease her in a caring way.

Think. Then write your ideas about one of the above statements. Tell if and why you think the idea could help Louise feel like she belongs.
