Winter Picture Story

A story uses words to make pictures in your mind. The story you'll write in this activity begins with someone speaking. Suppose you hear someone yell, "Hhhhhhelp! I'm freeeeeezing! Get me out of here!"

The person screaming may have fallen through thin < >.

There are many possibilities, but here is one: *t*h*i*n**i*c*e*

Ideas for this story will grow as you move down through the file. Answer questions as best you can. You can change them later as new ideas strike you.

Winter Picture Story

"Brrrrrrr. I'm cold! I'm glad to get inside where it's warm."

Get the picture? Someone has just come in from out-of-doors!!! Who do you think says, "Brrrrrrr..."? A man, woman, or child?

<  >

Give your speaker a name.

<  >

What is the age of your speaker?

<  >

What does your speaker look like?

<  >

In a story, a speaker is called a "character." Answer the questions about your character below.

Why is he/she shivering from the cold?

<  >

Where has your character just come from?

<  >

What is the place called?

<  >

What sort of place is it?

<  >

====================

You can use (or change) the answers you've just given to write a short beginning of a story. But, first, let's get down more ideas -- ideas for the middle of the story. Did you hint at a problem, or conflict, in any of your answers so far? If not, you'll need to, soon! In this story, your character has a problem to solve by the end of the story. The middle of the story is about the problem.

What problem, or trouble, does your character have?

<  >

What sparked, or caused, the problem? For example, if your character has to stay in bed for a week (problem), maybe it's because he/she caught pneumonia (effect) after falling through thin ice (cause).

<  >

What effect will the problem have on your character?

<  >

How does your character feel about it?

<  >

====================

Active story characters are problem solvers. They figure out a way to get themselves out of trouble.

List three actions your character can take to get out of trouble or solve his/her problem:

1. <  >

2. <  >

3. <  >

Think about advantages and disadvantages for each solution. Then answer the next questions.

What action (solution) will your character take?

<  >

Why does your character choose this action?

<  >

How will the action solve the problem or trouble?

<  >

How does your character feel about his/her action(s)?

<  >

====================

By the end of your story, your character should have learned something. It may be something about him- or herself, something about someone else, or something about life in general. Write what your character learns at the end of your story.

What did your character learn from his/her experience?

<  >

You may have more information than you need to write your story. Be ready to toss out an idea if a better one strikes you. Think what makes the best story.

Use (or change) your answers to write a story about your character. Begin with your character speaking. Check to be sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
