Celebrations
December, January, February

Winter is a time to celebrate! Jews celebrate Hanukkah. Christians celebrate Christmas. Most everyone in the world celebrates the coming of a New Year. And, a special day to remember special people is Valentine's Day.

Read about some of these celebrations below. Then write responses to the questions following each celebration.

December

Hanukkah

In 1980, Billy Apple was asked to paint a holiday picture at his school in Pennsylvania. There was no Christmas tree or Santa Claus in Billy's picture. Billy painted a candlestick holding nine candles. The "Menorah" is a holiday symbol in Jewish homes for Hanukkah. Hanukkah, or the feast of lights, is an old, old custom. Billy's artwork is new, but has been shown over 60 million times! It is on the Christmas seal of the American Lung Association.

Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah with special foods, such as "latkes," or potato pancakes. During the eight day celebration, special puzzles and riddles are enjoyed. But the main symbol of this solemn, yet joyous feast is lighting the Menorah, a sign of worship and tradition.

Do you celebrate Hanukkah? If so, what would you choose to picture in a drawing about Hanukkah?

< >

What feeling would you want your picture to show? (happy, sad, thoughtful, etc.)

< >

If you don't celebrate Hanukkah, what custom do you think is most special?

Christmas

"And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." (Luke 2:7) The Bible doesn't give the date when Jesus was born. The Eastern church celebrates "Christ Mass" on January 6, or the Feast of the Epiphany. The Western church celebrates the birth of Christ on December 25. That's because in Europe, December 25 was already an important day -- pagans celebrated the sun! Christians began to celebrate Christ's birth on the same day. While the purpose changed, some customs did not. Holly, mistletoe, and burning the Yule log go back to ancient times.

Do you celebrate Christmas? If so, what is most important about your celebration of Christmas?

< >

If you don't celebrate Christmas, what Christmas custom do you think is nicest?

January

New Year's

The first day of the New Year is a day to celebrate all around the world. In ancient times in Europe, an old king was killed to make way for the new. Later, an animal was killed instead of the king. In modern times, people begin the new year by making good resolutions.

Do you make New Year resolutions? If so, what is one:

< >

If you don't make New Year resolutions, name one you might consider making.

Read about New Year customs in the United States below, and do the writing activities.

In the United States, people dress up and wear masks on New Year's Eve. Then, at the stroke of midnight, they tear off their masks and shout "Happy New Year!" Some churches hold "watch meetings." They pray silently at midnight and welcome in the New Year with bells and chimes. In some towns, the "dead" old year is rung out. Bells are tolled for five minutes before ringing in the New Year.

Do you celebrate New Year's with noise? What kind of noise?

< >

The Annual Mummer's parade is held on New Year's Day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thousands of banjos and glockenspiels ring. An army of musicians, clowns, floats, and marchers light up the day. The rest of Philadelphia watches.

In 1890, people in Pasadena, California, paraded and picnicked on New Year's Day. Prizes went to the most beautifully decorated horse-drawn buggies. By 1895, the event was so big an association was formed. And, today, the Tournament of Roses parade ends with the Rose Bowl football game!

Have you seen a New Year's Day parade? If so, tell something about it.

< >

If you haven't seen a New Year's Day parade, which would you most like to see, Philadelphia's or Pasadena's?

Valentine's Day

February 14 is the day to exchange loving or funny greeting cards and gifts. The original "Valentine" is a mystery. At least two Valentines were martyrs of the early Church. Over time, one Saint Valentine became the patron of couples who wished to marry.

Do you know a Valentine verse? No??? Here's your chance! Write a little 3 to 4-line verse for someone special.

Does your community hold a Winter Carnival? Do you have Snow Days, Jack Frost Festivals, or Winter Wheat Days? What about dog sled races, skiing, skating, broom ball, or ice carving competitions? By yourself or with a partner, list as many as you can:

< >

Read about coming events in local newspapers or magazines. Better yet, attend a celebration! Then write a news report, a paragraph describing your winter event. Answer who-what-where-why-when questions.

< >

====================

Make up your own winter celebration.

1) What do you like most about winter? It can be anything from alpine sliding to below zero weather.

< >

2) Name your celebration. It's name is < > Day.

3) How does < > Day make you feel? (Use a "feeling" word, like happy, scared, etc.)

< >

4) Why do you like < > Day?

< >

5) How should < > Day be celebrated? (Use specific words. For example, a "clown costume" is more specific than "costume" or "dress up.")

< >

6) Will < > Day be celebrated on a certain date of a certain month? Or will it be a "moveable feast," like the last Monday or Friday of a certain month?

< >

====================

Report on a winter celebration. You can write about a real or an imaginary event.

1) Write a short news item for your school or local paper to tell about the day. Give who-what-where-why-when information.

< >

2) Write a letter to a friend (real or imaginary). Tell what you did during a winter celebration. Tell how you felt before and after. Tell what you were pleased with and not pleased with.
