Two Fall Authors

Read a poem and write a little story. Then, read a short passage from a story and write a little poem.

Here's the poem:

Autumn
by Emily Dickinson

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

Prewrite

Write a short story about the kind of person (male or female) you think speaks in the poem.

Describe what you think your person looks like; talks like; acts like.

< >

What is your person's favorite thing to do?

< >

Is this a person you could be friends with? Tell why or why not.

Rewrite/Edit

Reread your story or poem. Check to see if you used words like I, me, and mine. Then, read your story out loud to a friend. Ask your friend to suggest words that would make your story more colorful and descriptive. Add these words to your story or poem.

====================

Here is a short passage from a story.

"He was a friend to all things wild, and the wild things repaid him with their friendship. Tamed in his enclosures were the geese that came winging down the coast of Ireland and Spitsbergen each October, in great skeins that darkened the sky and filled the air with the rushing noise of their passage -- the brown-bodied pink feet, white-breasted barnacles with their dark necks and clowns' masks, the wild shirt fronts with black-barred breasts, and many species of wild ducks -- widgeon, mallard, pintails, teal, and shovelers."

Prewrite

Write a poem based on the passage. Begin by thinking about the passage. The following questions have no right or wrong answers. Think of them as "prompts" to answer or not, just as you like.

In one or two words, how does the passage make you feel?

< >

Your feeling may come from words within the passage or it may come from outside the passage -- from within yourself. What do you think? Where does your feeling come from?

< >

Picture the scene described in the passage. Who or what do you see? Do you see colors? Objects? What sounds do you hear? What are the sounds like?

< >

What is the strongest image (picture) you get from the passage? This might make a good subject for your poem.

< >

Can you put your strongest image from the passage into one word?

< >

Think of words that rhyme with your image-word:

< >

Think of words that rhyme with these words:

October --

wild --

friend --

geese --

wing --

rushing --

feet --

masks --

teal --

Rewrite/Edit

Read your poem out loud. Does it mean what you want it to mean? Does it sound like you want it to sound? Some good poems just "spring up," but most good poems need a little fixing here and there to keep from "falling behind"!

Share your poem with a friend.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press Ctrl-S, type a name for the file, and press Enter.)
