Things to Know about Sentence Combining

A piece of writing is made up of long sentences and short ones. Often a really important idea stands alone in a short sentence. It gets more attention that way. When you combine sentences, you can rearrange words, add and drop words, and add endings to words. But you must include all the ideas from the original sentences.

Ways to Combine

Sentences that relate to one another can be combined with connectors to show their relationship. For example:

Sequence or Time:

and, when, then, after, before, while, whenever, during, adding -ing to verb, until, if

Cause and Effect

since, because, so that, if/then

Comparison:

although, even though, though, however, while, as much as, on the other hand, but, either/or, neither/nor


Some connecting words above are those we called because words: when, after, before, while, whenever, during, since, because, if, although, even though, though. These words connect two related sentences. They can appear in two different places in a combined sentence.

For example:

If you dawdle over breakfast, you'll be late for school. (Please notice the comma!)

Or:

You'll be late for school if you dawdle over breakfast. (Please notice that there is no comma!)

Describing Words:

1. who, whom, which, that, whose

For example:

I love pizza that is gooey and messy!

2. Inserting a describing word from one sentence into another.

For example:

I love that pizza.
That pizza is gooey.
That pizza is messy.

Might become:

I love that gooey, messy pizza!
