Falling Across

Play "Falling Across" by thinking first of a subject (for fall, of course!). Then take the first word that comes to mind about the subject and type the letters of that word down the screen. Type new words beginning with each letter about the subject across the screen. Here's an example:

Subject: Columbus

First Word: Ship

----- Falling Across -----

S ship, sail, sailor, Santa Maria, South America, Spain
H home, Hispanola, hope, happy, honor, haste, hull
I island, inland, isle, items, imagination
P Pinta, proof, problem, possibility, pray, prosper, priest

Here's an example of a poem that uses words or "alike-words" from the list:

"Columbus"

From Spain to South America
He sailed his jolly ship.
He hoped honors far from home
Would pay the long long trip.

Happy sailors in the hull
Saw treasures in the hold;
Imagining an island full
Would keep them strong and bold.

O Nina! O Pinta! O Santa Maria!
Prayers to prosper and prove
A sailing route from West to East-
And to Hispanola sailed the crew!

Count how many "Falling Across" words show up in this poem.

(You can sing "Columbus" to the tune of "My Name is MacNamara -- I'm the Leader of the Band." Never heard of it???? Ask a grandparent or music teacher to hum it!)

Your "Falling Across"

Your poem can be short, or it can be as long as the "Columbus" poem. It's your choice -- it's your poem! Use your "Falling Across" words to help -- not worry -- your imagination.

Think of your own fall subject or play "Falling Across" with one of these subjects:

Halloween
Thanksgiving
Football
Homecoming
Fall
Autumn
Migrate
Weather

Type the letters of your word going down.

Go up to each letter in your word and type words across that begin with that letter.

Next, choose one or two of your "Falling Across" lists. Use word lists to write a poem.
