"I Am" Similes

"I" is
as good a starting place
for a simile poem
as warm soup is for a good meal.

I am angry like a hammer bashing
I am as steady as the stars
I am quiet like turnips in the ground
I am brave like a mother bear
I am as friendly as seals playing together

====================

Three common patterns for writing similes are used in this activity. Here are the patterns:

I am as ___ as a ___ .
I am ____ like a ___ .
I am like a ___ .

Complete the patterns below.

I am as quiet as a <  >.
I am quiet like a <  >.

The next patterns leave more for you to fill in. After filling in the blanks, feel free to extend the details in your answers. For example:

I am as free as a whale
swimming in the Pacific Ocean
at night with a full moon.

I am like a juggler
who has twenty-three things flying in the air
and doesn't know where any of the things are
but catches most of them
and never understands how.

I am as <  > as a <  >.

I am like a <  >.

I am as <  > as a <  >.

I am like a <  >.

====================

To write a simile poem, you can take a theme -- you, in this case -- and make all your similes relate to that theme.

I am like a breeze blowing over a lake
I am like a leaf drifting softly to the earth
I am like the moon when it breaks out of the clouds
I am like a road winding through a thick forest
I am like a cozy den in a little log cabin
I am like seeds lying deep in the earth
I'm like hope giving sadness a hug

====================

You may want to feature one image in your poem. Some images that work well are tree, sky, river, ocean, raindrop, snowflake, house, city, friend, book, poem.... Maybe you can think of some others.

Here is an example. This poem centers on the image of a house.

I am like a house no one visits.
I am as broken as a house with shattered windows.
I am as happy as a house with new blue paint.
I am as sad as a house with a broken floor.
I am as carefree as a house with the sun shining in.
I am as lazy as a house with an unmowed lawn.
I am as silly as a house full of monkeys.
I am as wise as a house alone on a hill.

====================

Now write a few simile poems about you. Each of your poems may reflect a different part of you -- we all have many different moods, feelings, dreams, and interests.
