Audience and Purpose 2

This file continues with writing for a specific audience for a specific purpose. The specific purpose we'll look at is writing to entertain. Writing to entertain is not always humorous; it can entertain or involve readers without being funny.

Writing can entertain or involve readers without being funny. For examples, read the following paragraphs:

Story Beginning 1:

Heavy snow fell that evening and continued through the night. Jed woke up to an all white world outside, but not inside. Inside he felt the darkness settling in again. Nothing had changed.

What feeling is communicated in the above paragraph?

Story Beginning 2:

"Snow! It snowed all night," Jed shouted, "and it's still falling! Hey, Matt, wake up. Let's go skiing!"

Story Beginning 3:

Snow was up over my knees. I trudged through mounds of heavy whiteness. All was still, except for the soft shuffle of my boots. I stopped and listened. Somewhere out there, I had to find Dirk. But could I find him before the snow turned blue and dark sky covered this strange, unfamiliar horizon?

Story Beginning 4:

Snow! I hate snow, Amanda thought. I wish I could go to Hawaii -- or down South -- or Southern California. Yah, that's it, San Diego! She opened her wallet. "Thirty-five dollars?" she screamed. "That's not enough to get me from here to Brooklyn!"

====================

As you know, and the above examples show, writing to entertain can be funny, sad, gloomy, mysterious, uplifting... In short, writing to entertain can mirror any mood or feeling an author wishes to convey. Writing to entertain often takes the form of telling a story.

You'll notice the short paragraphs you just worked with had something in common besides to entertain. All the story beginnings were built around the word "snow."

Choose one of the following words, or one of your own, to build stories around. Using the same word in each, write an opening paragraph for at least three different stories. Try to establish a particular mood for each paragraph.

snow
rain
sun
water
sneaker
cabin
boat

My story word is:

Story Opening 1:

Story Opening 2:

Story Opening 3:

State the particular mood or feeling you tried to create in your story openings.

1. < >

2. < >

3. < >

Ask a writing partner to read your story openings. See if your partner's reactions match the moods or feelings you tried to establish. If they don't match, decide together what is missing. Revise.

Choose a story opening from this file, preferably one of those you wrote yourself! Make a copy of it at the angle brackets below. Complete the story by writing a middle and an ending. Work alone or with a partner.
