Social Security Number

Every American citizen or person applying for work in the United States is required to have a social security number (SSN). In recent years, social security numbers have been issued at birth. Probably you already have one.

What do you think your SSN is used for? Write your ideas at the angle brackets.

====================

Your SSN makes it possible for the government to keep track of your tax records and to manage your social security account. Monies are used to pay pension funds for persons who are retired or have special needs. Your SSN is used by many agencies and companies as your personal identification number. No two people have the same social security number.

Your teacher may give you a handout. The form used to apply for a social security number is similar to the one you will receive as a handout. Fill out this sample form as completely as possible, as if you were actually applying for a social security number.

====================

Your local office for the Social Security Administration can provide you with further information about your social security. You may write or telephone them for:

*a social security application
*an estimate of social security benefits
*proof of the amount of social security or supplemental income payments
*a pamphlet on various social security programs

Choose one item of information from the list above and write a letter to your local Social Security Administration office requesting this information. Write you letter at the angle brackets. (You may want to review the files on business letters.)

You may want to print just your letter and send for the information.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
