"Contrast" Essay Questions

Often an essay question will ask you to contrast something with something else. You may be asked to contrast football and baseball, sewing and cooking, rabbits and cats, apples and oranges, democracy and dictatorship, love and hate, or spaghetti and pizza.

When you write a contrast between two or more things, you emphasize the differences but when a question asks you to compare, you emphasize the similarities.

Strategy

Begin by listing differences that fall into the same category. A simple trick to help you do this is to use the word "while:"

For example, here is a way to contrast love and hate using "while."

Love Is: gentle
While
Hate Is: violent

Love Is: patient
While
Hate Is: impulsive

Love Is: happy
While
Hate Is: painful

Love Is: learning
While
Hate Is: reacting

Love Is: taking turns
While
Hate Is: controlling

Love Is: kisses
While
Hate Is: hits

Now, it should be easier to write your essay.

"Contrast" Essay Question

Contrast the emotions of love and hate, explaining their differences.

"Contrast" Essay Answer

Step One

Rephrase the question into a topic sentence.

"I will contrast love and hate which are opposites with many different qualities."

Step Two

Describe their differences (refer to your list).

"Hate and love are very different in many ways. Love is gentle and generous, while hate is violent and stingy. Love tries to be patient but sometimes it is hard, especially if one is lonely and in love with someone. Hate never tries to be patient, unless it is waiting for revenge. Love creates more and more happiness. This is especially true of the love in a family. Any happiness that comes from hate is usually short-lived. Love takes turns and learns about the other person. Hate tries to control everything. Hate thinks it knows the truth about a person or situation, and it doesn't allow any room for change or for improvement."

Step Three

Write a summary or concluding statement.

"By contrasting love and hate I see that they are opposites. In the most important ways they are totally different."

From the set of nine topics below, choose three and make contrast lists using the "this is/while/that is" set-up. Below is the love/hate contrast list for your reference.

Example:

Love Is: gentle
While
Hate Is: violent

Love Is: patient
While
Hate Is: impulsive

Love Is: happy
While
Hate Is: painful

Love Is: learning
While
Hate Is: reacting

Love Is: taking turns
While
Hate Is: controlling

Love Is: kisses
While
Hate Is: hits

Choose and complete three contrast lists. Put your word/s in the angle brackets.
