Missing

The passage below is the beginning of a speech -- the Gettysburg Address -- that was given by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. In it, he is dedicating part of a battlefield as a national monument. You'll see that most of the vowels have been replaced by an asterisk (*). Your job is to delete each *, and replace it with the right vowel letter.

The Gettsburg Address

Now that you have filled in the missing vowels, see if you can do the next puzzle. Here your job is to separate the words by adding a space between each word. [Place the cursor on the last letter of a word and press the Space Bar.] Then scroll back to the last screen to see if you put in the correct vowels!

As you revise, remember: type one space after a comma and one space between sentences.

Go to the next screen to compare your work with a correct version of the Gettysburg Address. Make any changes you would like to your version.

Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

If you have time, take turns with your partner making up a vowel puzzle. One partner can make up a sentence (or take one from any book), and use an * to replace each vowel letter. Then another partner replaces the * with the correct vowel letter. Write at the < > below.
