A writer who was working on several different essays at the same time mixed up his note cards! You'll see the results -- the essay below has four sentences in it that don't belong to the topic. Find them and then delete them by selecting the block of text, then pressing Delete or Backspace.

A palindrome is a word that is spelled the same way backwards and forwards. It's interesting that both "mom" and "dad" are palindromes. No one has ever counted all the palindromes in English. There's only one two-letter palindrome: "aa," which is a kind of lava from a volcano. The smallest human bone is in the ear. Another interesting palindrome is "madam," which can also be spelled "ma'am." Notice that ma'am is also a palindrome! An ear drum can be broken by a very loud noise. Perhaps the longest one-word palindrome in English is "releveler," with nine letters. Some people don't have ear lobes. The names Otto and Hannah are palindromes. Can you think of any others? A slang word from the sixties is "groovy."

Below is another paragraph to work with. It is also about the English language. Pretend you're the writer of this activity: add three sentences to this paragraph that don't fit. Then have your partner/editor delete them from the screen. Or, print out your "messed up" paragraph and exchange papers with a friend. Edit with a pencil!

The English language contains more words than any other. Modern dictionaries have approximately 600,000 entries! In the first English dictionary of 1755, there were only 50,000 entries, so you can see that many new words have entered the English language. In everyday speech only about 60,000 words are used. The most commonly used are these: "the," "of," "and," "to," "a," "in," "that," "is," "I," "for," and "as." In conversation the word "I" is used more often than any other.
