Recipe Story Turkey

How long does it take to fix a turkey?

< >

To answer, you need to decide what is meant by "fix"! Even then, the answer has a long history. Read one recipe for fixing a turkey. Then, write a story using your wishbone or your funnybone!

Recipe Story (or, A Story for a Turkey)

Today's holiday foods come in packaged shapes and sizes. Much of the preparation is done before home cooking ever starts. Take that popular fowl, the turkey. Today we buy turkeys already killed, de-feathered, and cleaned inside and out. They are "oven-ready."

Read this colonial recipe from the 1700's for preparing turkey for Christmas dinner:

Coop up turkey and feed well. Three days before slaughtering, force an English walnut down its throat three times a day and a glass of sherry once a day. The meat will be deliciously tender with a fine, nutty flavor.

Write a short story. Go back in time to the 18th century. Pretend you are a young colonist. You expect a crowd for the holiday meal. You've never fixed a turkey, and will use the above recipe.

To get started, here are some ideas to consider:

1. To coop up a turkey, you must:

Write

Now you are ready to write your story. Answers to the above questions contain ideas for a beginning, a middle, and an end. Don't forget to use words that describe how something looks, feels, tastes, smells, and sounds.

Write a draft of your story. Remember that you are a young colonist living in the 1700's. You expect a crowd for dinner and you've never fixed a turkey before. Give your story a title, too.

Rewrite/Edit

After you write your story, read it through. See what parts you'd like to change. Then, share it with friends. See what parts your friends like and what parts need rewriting. Make any changes to it that you would like to make.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press Ctrl-S, type a name for the file, and press Enter.)
