Placename Myth
This activity requires The Placename Myths handout. If you don't have the handout, you will need to ask your teacher for it or skip this activity.

Do you ever wonder how a place gets its name? Some places have names from Greek myths -- for example, "Ithaca." Some places are named for famous people who become legends, such as "Boonesborough." To answer some of the questions below, read the little myth about how a river got its name on the handout: Placename Myths.

Do you have a favorite place name? What is it?

< >

Name and save this file now. (Press Ctrl-S, type a name for the file, and press Enter.)

====================

Here are more place names: Green Mountain -- Winona -- Pike Lake -- Buena Vista -- Blooming Prairie -- Springfield -- Bowling Green -- Heidi Creek -- Hagerstown -- Spit's Crossing.

Choose a place name.

< >

Does the place name suggest one or more of these:

- a person
- something in nature
- musical sounds
- an object
- colors
- an action
- a season

Which one(s)?

< >

Imagine how it got its name. Write a short story telling how it happened after answering these questions.

Use "picture" words in your story. For example, in the "Wind River" story in the handout, notice that Mount Winter roared and howled. What sounds did Spring Mountain make?

< >

Use "color" words in your story. In the "Wind River" story, notice that Mount Winter was white. What colors did Spring Mountain have?

< >

Write your story within the angle brackets below.

< >

Rewrite/Edit

Read your story out loud or have your writing partner read it to you. What "sounds" does your story make? What colors does it include? You may want to go back to your story to add more sounds and colors.

Try to draw a picture or find a photograph to go with the place you name in your story. Share your picture and story with the class.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press Ctrl-S, type a name for the file, and press Enter.)
