Using Examples

Good writers use examples to help illustrate their writing. For example, the sentence "Matt was crushed" would be more powerful if the reader could see how crushed Matt really was. Another sentence could be added to show Matt's disappointment: "He sank to his knees and buried his face in his hands."

Simple statements of fact are often dull. Illustrations and descriptions heighten a reader's interest and add color and energy to any writing.

In the sentences below, add two more sentences that give examples and help to illustrate further the first sentence in each set. In the first example, ask yourself these questions:

- What does the cat look like?
- How nervous was the cat?
- What example can I give to let the reader know just how nervous the cat really was?
