Name: < > Class: < > Date: < > Changes "I used to be a smashed bug lying on the sidewalk, But now I'm a monarch soaring free!" Sandy Smith 7th Grader We are always changing. Once you couldn't read, now you can. Once you wrote with a pencil, now you write with a computer. Once you rode a tricycle, now you ride a ten-speed. Think about changes that occur to everyone your age. Think about changes that are very personal. Think about yourself when you were younger. Think about yourself as a baby, as a toddler, as a kindergartener, as a second grader, as you are now. Write a poem in an "I used to" form about yourself. Here's an example: I used to have short hair, But now I have long. I used to like ice cream, But now I like yogurt. I used to ride tricycles, But now I race bikes. I used to play chopsticks, But now I play Chopin. I used to slink in the corner, But now I hover in command. ==================== I Used To Be I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > I used to < > But now < > Name and save this file now. Then write a short essay telling how this change came about. Here is an example of an "I Used To Be" statement: "I used to be stuck up, But now I am friendly." Here is an essay using this statement as its topic: "I was stuck up for a long time. I don't know how I got that way. Maybe secretly I was afraid I wasn't as good as other people. Anyway, I got stuck up in about the third grade. I was elected class president then. I acted like I was really hot. I laughed at other kids who weren't as popular as I was. "What made me stop being stuck up? I'm not sure. Probably I noticed that I wasn't having much fun. I think I was nervous that people wouldn't like me. It was like I always had to be in control and putting other people down. It just seemed wrong to try to feel good about myself by thinking badly of others." ==================== First, copy the lines you chose from your poem and place the copy by the first marker below.
