Trapeze

Some poems repeat a line in the beginning, like "Little Door, Little Door" in one of the earlier files you may have worked on. Not this poem! Can you find the repeating lines in "Let's Build a Trapeze"? Why do you think poets like to use repeating lines?

Read the poem "Let's Build a Trapeze" on the screen below. You may want to compare it with the Shel Silverstein poem "The Acrobats" in Where the Sidewalk Ends, if you're curious to see where the ideas for this poem came from.

Let's Build a Trapeze

There's a nice breeze
Beneath these trees
Let's build a trapeze
Let's build a trapeze

Wind clothesline tight
Between two trees
Listen to the rope
Hum in the breeze
Let's build a trapeze
Let's build a trapeze

Let's swing up and grasp the bar
Let's swing out, let's swing far
High around and down we'll fly
On our trapeze we'll touch the sky

There's a nice breeze
Beneath these trees
Let's build a trapeze
Let's build a trapeze

Write

The above poem is built on three rhyming words:

breeze	trees	trapeze

Brainstorm all the other words and rhyming words you can think of that have to do with playing in the breeze, playing on a trapeze. Below are some words to help you lift into the air without a care. Add words and rhyming words that may roar and soar with the theme of flying with ease on a trapeze.

acrobat
tightrope walker
balance
glide
float

Rewrite/Edit

Read your poem out loud, perhaps to a friend, and have a friend read it. Decide the parts you like best and least. Then see what ideas you have for fixing your poem. Scroll up and revise your trapeze poem;

please do it with ease,
don't fall on a wall,
or into the trees,
float happily up on
a sun bright breeze.
