Name: < > Class: < > Date: < > Limericks Your teacher may have given you a handout about limericks. Before you write your own limericks, read and enjoy with your classmates the poems on the "Limericks" handout. Like chants, limericks have a definite rhythm. Like acrostics, they are a bit of a puzzle. The puzzle is that you must match a standard limerick pattern. The pattern goes like this. The first, second, and fifth lines of your poem must rhyme. The third and fourth lines must also rhyme, and must also be shorter than the first, second, and fifth lines. Example: There once was a girl named Nicole Who lived to ice skate, ski, and bowl, She liked to play sports Of all kinds and sorts And at golf was an ace in the hole. ==================== Sometimes a list of rhyming words helps you think about a limerick. Below are the "ush" and "ight" word families. You can use the words in one word family for the endings to the first, second, and fifth lines, which must rhyme. Then use the words in the other word family for the shorter third and fourth lines, which also must rhyme. Words in the "ight" Word Family airtight alight all right bedlight birthright blight bright bullfight candlelight copyright daylight delight downright eyesight fight flashlight flight floodlight footlight insight knight light light limelight midnight might playwright prizefight right searchlight sight skylight slight spotlight starlight sunlight tight tonight Words in the "ush" Word Family blush brush thrush crush flush gush hush inrush lush mush onrush plush slush rush sagebrush ==================== My Limerick Poems < > Name and save this file now.
