Adverb Sentences

Sentences are more fun to read if you use describing words. These describing words are called adjectives and adverbs. You can "color" your sentences by using adjectives and adverbs. In this activity you will work with adverbs.

Adverbs are words that describe verbs in sentences. For example, the verb in the following sentence is "talked." Notice what happens to the sense of the sentence as we add different adverbs one at a time to describe the verb "talked."

1. Alice talked quietly to me.
2. Alice talked loudly to me.
3. Alice talked sadly to me.
4. Alice talked angrily to me.
5. Alice talked sweetly to me.

In this activity, build a series of sentences about a dog running. Each new sentence will contain a different adverb about how the dog runs.

First make a list of adverbs that describe how a dog might run. For example, your list should include the adverb "quickly."

Now add an adverb to each sentence to tell how the dog runs. The first one is done for you.

1. My dog runs <quickly> home.
2. My dog runs < > home.
3. My dog runs < > home.
4. My dog runs < > home.
5. My dog runs < > home.

Name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)

Read each sentence again. Close your eyes as you finish reading each one and imagine a dog you know of running in the way you described. Can you add more detail to your sentence showing what you see in your imagination?

====================

Choose the sentence that creates the best picture in your mind. Copy or retype it in the space below. Then use your imagination to add more details describing how the dog looks as it runs. To turn your thoughts into a simple paragraph, write another sentence or two telling where or why the dog is running.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
