Case Study 1

In the first Job Storming file, "Preparation For Interview," you learned about some of the difficulties involved in a part-time job. The purpose of considering the drawbacks is not to discourage you from seeking a job, but to make you more aware of what is involved in getting and keeping a job.

Anticipating the Difficulties May Prevent Problems

Do you need convincing? Help unravel the situation below.

(1) Monday p.m.: On the way home from school, Robin sees a sign in the supermarket window. The sign says, "WANTED: Part-time carry-out boys." Great! Robin thinks, I can do that. He stops by the supermarket to ask about the job. A clerk says, "Come back at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon and talk to the manager." Robin goes home and says, "Hey! Mom! I think I've got a job at the supermarket!"

(2) Tuesday a.m.: During lunch hour, Robin remembers that he has hockey practice after school. He tells the coach that he has to go to work and can't make practice.

(3) Tuesday p.m.: Robin talks to the manager of the supermarket and is told to fill out an application and come back on Wednesday. Robin says, "Great!" and goes home and fills out the application. That night, Robin wonders what to do. He should have told the store manager that he couldn't start work until Thursday because he has a hockey game on Wednesday after school! He can't miss the game!

(4) Wednesday a.m.: Robin has trouble keeping his mind on his classwork.

(5) Wednesday p.m.: Robin goes to the hockey game after school and decides he will stop by the supermarket afterwards to explain why he couldn't start work right after school.

(6) Wednesday p.m.: After the game, Robin stops by the supermarket. The cashier tells him, "Oh, Mr. Carlson left at 4:30 today." "Will you give him my application?" Robin asks. "Sure," the cashier says taking the application. "Did you put this through the washing machine?" "Sorry," Robin answers, "I had it in my hockey bag all day. Maybe I should fill out a new one." Robin leaves with a second application.

(7) Thursday a.m.: Robin stops by the supermarket before going to school and has to wait for Mr. Carlson to get off the phone. Mr. Carlson says because he hasn't had a chance to look at the application Robin should come back after school.

(8) Thursday p.m. Robin is late for first hour class. After school, he misses hockey practice in order to get to the supermarket before Mr. Carlson leaves. "Well, Robin," says the manager, "It's too bad you didn't tell me you were only fifteen. You must be sixteen to work here. Try us next year."

How do you think Robin feels?

a. dumb
b. angry with the store manager
c. angry with himself
d. all of the above

If you answered "d" you are probably right.
