Using Your Senses 1


Look around you. Make a list at the marker below of all the colors you can see. Use one word to describe each color, such as red.

Now look again at those same items in your surroundings. Make a copy of your color words list beside the marker below. Then add one or two words to each color word to further describe the color, such as fire engine red or rusty red.

Choose one of the colors from your list above. Look again at the object that contains that color. Write a brief paragraph describing the object. Focus especially on its color.

With your eyes closed, listen carefully. What sounds do you hear? Listen to the sounds that immediately catch your attention. Now open your eyes and make a list of all the things around you that make a sound, such as a pencil sharpener or a phone.

Make a copy of or retype your list of sounds. Place the copy next to the marker below. Then add one or two words that really help to describe the sound, pencil such as sharpener -- grinding noise or computer keys -- clicking sound.

Sound Riddles

Choose one of the sound makers from your list. Write a riddle describing the object's sound so that someone else could guess the object. Don't name the object in your riddle.

Here is an example:

I crack and clink when I'm cold.
I drip and plop when I'm warm.
I bubble when I'm hot.
What am I?
