Opinion Dilemma -- Prewrite

This activity should be completed by your writing group working together. If you do not have a writing group, do the activity with one to three other students. (The activity can be completed by you working alone if a group is not possible.)

Brainstorm

On the screen below, you will read a description of a moral dilemma. Following that screen will be a space for you to brainstorm all the thoughts and ideas your writing group has about the dilemma.

To brainstorm means to be spontaneous, quickly putting down all ideas without discussing or evaluating them. Don't worry about the order or importance of the ideas; just type them. Don't be concerned with resolving the dilemma.

Make sure you have your group's best typist at the keyboard.

Follow these rules as you brainstorm.

Rules

Include every idea offered
Don't discuss the ideas
Everyone must participate
No put-downs
Work as quickly as possible

Remember, this is a difficult topic and it may not have a simple answer. Enjoy exploring the contradictory ideas you and your friends may have.

Opinion Dilemma

(Please have one person read out loud.)

A close friend asks and genuinely wants your opinion about something, but your opinion is one that your friend is likely to find quite painful.

Your friend wants to become a doctor. Your friend is not at all talented in the areas of math and science. It is only through extreme effort and lots of help from you that your friend has maintained good grades in these classes.

Your honest opinion of your friend's chances for being successful are slight, and you definitely feel it is not a profession in which your friend would be happy. This friend has already applied and been accepted at a college with a good medical program.

Think about what you will do.

Clarify

Complete each step before going on to the next one:

Step One -- Delete Irrelevant Ideas

Discuss each idea and decide to keep it or delete it. Do not delete an idea because it contradicts another idea. Delete only those ideas that the group agrees are irrelevant to the dilemma.

Scroll up and do this now.

Step Two -- Write Sentences

Rewrite each idea into a complete sentence.

Scroll up and do this now.

Step Three -- Group Ideas

Read your list again. Arrange the ideas into groups of ideas that seem to belong together.

Scroll up and do this now.

Step Four -- Write Summary Statements for Idea Groups

Look back at each group of ideas. Write a statement that summarizes the group of ideas or states the main point for the group of ideas. Type this statement in CAPITALS at the beginning of the group so it stands out. Do the same for all your idea groups.

Scroll up and do this now.

Position Statement

Do your summary statements agree with one another or do some contradict one another? If all your statements agree, your group probably has one position on this issue. If you have statements that contradict one another, you may have several positions on this issue represented in your group.

Write position statements for your group on this issue. A position statement can be one or several sentences in length. It should state the group's over-all consensus on the issue. (Each group member will have a chance to elaborate on the position statement later in an essay.)

If your statements all agree, you will have one position statement. If there are contradictory positions within your group, write two statements -- a majority position and a minority position. (If your group is divided evenly, call them both minority positions.)

Our Position Statement(s)

Reread the statement(s) to make sure everyone agrees. Edit and rewrite, if necessary, until everyone feels their position is broadly represented by a position statement.
