Installation Notes for AudioScience Win3.1/95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP Multimedia Audio Driver

1. INTRODUCTION
---------------
This driver will enable operation of AudioScience adapters under Windows
3.X, Windows95, Windows98, Window NT 4.0, Windows2000 and Windows XP by applications 
that use the Microsoft multimedia audio functions (waveOut, waveIn and mixer).


2. HARDWARE INSTALLATION
------------------------

2.1 ASI4000/ASI5000/ASI6000 Series
- Install the ASI audio adapter in an empty PCI slot.
- Make sure the adapter jumper is set to Adapter 1 (factory default)
- Boot the computer.
- (Win95/98) goto 3.1, (WinME) goto 3.2, (Win2000 & XP) goto 3.3, (Win NT) goto 3.4,
	(Win3.1) goto 3.5


3. DRIVER INSTALLATION
----------------------

3.1 Windows 95/98
----------------

3.1.1 Install

Method A

- Windows95 will detect the adapter during boot and will ask you for a driver.
- Select "Driver from disk provided by manufacturer" and "browse" to the location on 
  your disk (or floppy) where you have the driver files.  You will need:
  ASIWAV16.DLL
  ASIDSP.BIN
  ASIWAV16.INF
- Win95 will install the driver and make any necessary changes to the system.
- You will then be asked to restart Windows, so that the driver will start running

Method B

- copy asiwav16.dll to c:\windows\system.
- copy asidsp.bin to c:\windows\system.
- edit c:\windows\system.ini so that it contain the following lines
[drivers]
wave=asiwav16.dll
mixer=asiwav16.dll

3.1.2 Update

- Unzip the updated driver onto either the hard drive or floppy (or even 2 floppies).
- Click "Start", "Shutdown","Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode".
- Copy the unzipped version ASIWAV16.DLL to c:\windows\system\asiwav16.dll. e.g.
	copy a:asiwav16.dll c:\windows\system\asiwav16.dll
- Copy the unzipped version ASIDSP.BIN to c:\windows\system\asidsp.bin. e.g.
	copy a:asidsp.bin c:\windows\system\asidsp.bin

3.1.3 Version information

Using Exporer, locate ASIWAV16.DLL in the system directory.
Right click on the file and select "Properties". Click on the "Version" tab at the
top of the properties box to view the driver version.

3.2 Windows ME
--------------------

3.2.1	Install Driver
- WindowsMe will detect the adapter during boot ("Windows has found a PCI 
  Multimedia Device" and will ask you for a driver.  
- Select "Specify a location" and press [Next].
- Choose "Search for the best driver for your device" and click "Specify a location". 
  Browse to the location on your disk (or floppy) where you have the driver files.  
  You will need:
  ASIWAV16.DLL
  ASIWAV16.INF
  ASIDSP.BIN

- WindowsMe will install the driver and make any necessary changes to the system. 
- You will then be asked to restart Windows, so that the new driver will start running.

3.2.2 Update

- Use this method when you want to change your version of the driver to a more current 
  version.
- Unzip the updated driver onto either the hard drive or floppy. 
  You will need:
  ASIWAV16.DLL
  ASIWAV16.INF

- Right click on the "My Computer" icon and select Properties.  Select "Device Manager" 
  and navigate to the AudioScience card (under sound and multimedia devices).
- Select "Properties" and the "Driver" tab.  Select "Update Driver" and 
  "Specify a location".  Follow the wizard prompts and browse to the location of the 
  new driver files.  Windows will then update the driver and prompt for a restart.

3.2.3 Version information

Using Exporer, locate ASIWAV16.DLL in the system directory.
Right click on the file and select "Properties". Click on the "Version" tab at the
top of the properties box to view the driver version.


3.3 Windows 2000 and XP
------------------------
3.3.1 Install

- Windows2000/XP will detect the adapter during boot and will ask you for a driver.
- Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device" and press "Next".
- "Browse" to the location on your disk (or floppy) where you have the driver files.  
  You will need:
  ASIWAV32.DLL
  ASIHPI32.DLL
  ASIHPIWN.SYS
  ASIWIN2K.INF
  ASIDSP.BIN
- Win2000/XP will install the driver and make any necessary changes to the system.
** Current problems **
- you will get a "failed to start kernel driver message"
- You will then be asked to restart Windows, so that the driver will start running
- upon reboot the driver will function normally

The following files are installed by the driver
c:\windows\system32\drivers\asihpiwn.sys
c:\windows\system32\asiwav32.dll
c:\windows\system32\asihpi32.dll
c:\windows\system32\asidsp.bin

3.3.2 Update Driver
- Goto the Control Panel, select the "Sounds and Multimedia" applet
- Select the "Hardware" tab.
- Select the AudioScience adapter and click "Properties"
- Select the "Driver" tab and click the "Update Driver" button.
- Select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver"
- Click "Have Disk" button.
- Point to where the driver files are located.
- The driver install wizard will then lead you through the rest of the installation process.

3.3.3 Uninstall the Driver
- Goto the Control Panel, select the "Sounds and Multimedia" applet
- Select the "Hardware" tab.
- Select the AudioScience adapter and click "Properties"
- Select the "Driver" tab and click the "Uninstall" button

3.3.3 Version information
Using Explorer, locate ASIWAV32.DLL in the system32 directory.
Right click on the file and select "Properties". Click on the "Version" tab at the
top of the properties box to view the driver version.



3.4 Windows NT 4.0
------------------
3.4.1 Install

- Open Control Panel and click on Multimedia icon.
- Select the "Devices" tab at the top right.
  Click on the "Add" button. Select "Unlisted or updated driver" and click ok.
  Browse to the location of the ASI NT driver files.
  Click ok and select restart when asked whether to start NT.

The following files are installed by the driver
c:\windows\system32\drivers\asihpik.sys
c:\windows\system32\asiwav32.dll
c:\windows\system32\asidsp.bin

3.4.2 Uninstall

- Open Control Panel and click on Multimedia icon.
- Select the "Devices" tab at the top right.
  Click on "Audio Devices" in the list box. Select "Audio for AudioScience..." and click
  the remove button. Click ok and select restart when asked whether to start NT.

  Alternative method (if first method gives blue screen)

- Open Control Panel and click on devices icon.
- Highlight AudioScience kernel driver.
  Click on stop button - this will probably give an error, but ignore it.
  Click on Startup - select disabled and close all dialog boxes.
- Reboot the computer.
- Open Control Panel and click on Multimedia icon.
- Select the "Devices" tab at the top right.
  Click on "Audio Devices" in the list box. Select "Audio for AudioScience..." and click
  the remove button. Click ok and select restart when asked whether to start NT.

  Alternative method (if first method leaves driver in ControlPanel\Multimedia\Devices\Audio Devices)

- On certain SMP machines the SYS driver uninstalls correctly, but the registry links to the
  asiwav32.dll are not removed. Use Start\Run and "regedit" to start the registry editor. Press
  ctrl-F and set search field to "asiwav32.dll". Delete all keys that are found (F3 is search again).
  Reboot the computer. You can now install an updated ASI driver in the normal manner.

3.4.3 Alternative upgrade method

- Boot the NT computer in DOS mode.
- copy asihpik.sys to c:\windows\system32\drivers.
- copy asiwav32.dll to c:\windows\system32.
- copy asidsp.bin to c:\windows\system32.
- Reboot the computer in NT.

3.4.4 Version information

Using Exporer, locate ASIWAV32.DLL in the system32 directory.
Right click on the file and select "Properties". Click on the "Version" tab at the
top of the properties box to view the driver version.



3.5 Windows 3.1x
------------------

3.5.1 Install
- Copy the files ASIWAV16.DLL, ASIDSP.BIN and MSMIXMGR.DLL to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
- Open SYSTEM.INI using NOTEPAD or some other text editor.

  Add the following line to SYSTEM.INI under the [drivers] section:

  wave=asiwav16.dll
  mixer=asiwav16.dll

  And in the [boot] section change
  drivers = mmsystem.dll
  to
  drivers = mmsystem.dll msmixmgr.dll

- restart Windows so that the driver gets loaded.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
