DESCRIPTION
___________

This README file contains important information on the usage and
installation of the Portable CD-ROM Driver version P2.0. This DOS
device driver is used to access the CD-ROM drive in a Compaq notebook
PC. If the notebook supports MultiBay devices, the driver offers the
Hot and Warm MultiBay Device Exchange feature under the DOS and
Windows 3.1 environments. Hot MultiBay Device Exchange is the
swapping of a CD-ROM drive, diskette drive and battery while the
notebook in ON and undocked. Warm MultiBay Exchange is the swapping
of a CD-ROM drive, diskette drive and battery while the notebook is
in suspend mode and undocked.

driver, edit the CONFIG.SYS file in the following manner:

1. At the DOS prompt (C:\), type

      EDIT CONFIG.SYS

2. To the line

3. Save and close the CONFIG.SYS file.

4. Restart the notebook so the changes take effect.

USAGE OF DRIVER ON THE COMPAQ LTE 5000 SERIES
_____________________________________________

This series supports only Warm MultiBay Device support. The user
starts the notebook with a diskette drive in the notebook MultiBay
and the diskette drive is accessible. The user can then place the
notebook into Suspend by pressing the Suspend button, remove the
MultiBay diskette drive and insert either a CD-ROM drive or a
battery. If a CD-ROM drive is installed, it is accessible upon
exiting Suspend mode. When a battery is installed, the noteboook
recognizes the second battery as a power source.

To enable the Warm MultiBay Device Exchange feature of the driver,
edit the CONFIG.SYS file in the following manner:

1. At the DOS prompt (C:\), type

      EDIT CONFIG.SYS

2. To the line

      DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CPQLTECD.SYS /D:IDECD001

   add the /W switch so the line reads

      DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CPQLTECD.SYS /W /D:IDECD001

3. Save and close the CONFIG.SYS file.

4. Restart the notebook so the changes take effect.

Notes on the COMPAQ LTE 5000 SERIES:
___________________________________

 1) This driver does not support audio on 2X CD-ROM drives with
    Compaq spare part number 213561-001 (see barcode label on the
    bottom of the CD-ROM drive). For audio support on these CD-ROM
    drives, please use the Teac TEAC_CDI.SYS driver instead of
    CPQLTECD.SYS.

      Edit the CONFIG.SYS file line

         DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CPQLTECD.SYS /D:IDECD001

      so it reads

         DEVICEHIGH=C:\AUDIO_CD\TEAC_CDI.SYS /D:IDECD001

 2) When the notebook is docked in the MultiBay Expansion Base, the
    Suspend device exchange feature is automatically disabled.

 3) When the notebook is undocked, the driver prevents access to
    drive B:. If you attemp to access drive B: (read, write or copy),
    the message "Invalid media type reading drive B:." is displayed.
    If you attempt to access Drive B: while in Windows 3.1 File
    Manager, the message "Drive B does not exist" is displayed.

 4) The A:, B: and CD-ROM drive letter icons are displayed in
    Windows 3.1 File Manager. However, only the device present in
    the notebook MultiBay can be accessed. If you select the B:
    icon, the message "Drive B does not exist" is displayed.

 5) Before removing the CD-ROM drive from the notebook, close all
    applications (such as the Compaq Sound System) that continuously
    poll (attempt to access) the CD-ROM drive. If these applications
    remain open after the CD-ROM drive has been removed from the
    notebook, system performance slows down. If you then close all
    applications (such as the Compaq Sound System) that attempt to
    access the CD-ROM drive, system performance returns to normal.
