1. CREATING THE BIOS INSTALLATION DISKETTE
------------------------------------------

  a. Create a system diskette
  b. Copy the contents of this directory onto this diskette:
     copy *.* A:
(Assuming that your diskette drive is A:)

2. FLASHING THE BIOS
--------------------

2.1 Safe flash process (Bootblock not flashed).
   -----------------------------------------------
       USE THIS ONE PREFERABLY
       -----------------------
       a. Insert the BIOS installation diskette into the A: (B:)
          drive
       b. Boot the PC from the diskette to ensure a clean boot.
       c. Launch the flashing command by typing from A: (B:) the
          following command:

          Flash

   2.2 Crisis recovery flash process.
   ----------------------------------
To be used if your bios is corrupted and you can't boot normally
       ----------------------------------------------------------------
        a. Copy the contents of this directory onto the diskette and
create an autoexec.bat file on it containing the following
           line :

           phlash /V /mode=3 /b=pfmhh106.bin /exit hh0105us.ful

        b. Switch off the PC.
        c. Toggle motherboard switch 7 and 8 to close position.
        d. Insert floppy.
        e. Power on the PC. The video is blank except if an external ISA
video card is plugged. Hear the PC flashing (several beeps
           can be heard).
The last long beep indicates the end of flashing.
        f. Power off the PC.
        g. Toggle back switch 7,8 and remove floppy. Bios is updated.
        h. Power on again the PC.

2.3 Standard flash process (Bootblock flashed).
    -----------------------------------------------
Should be used only if the Bootblock has changed since previous bios
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
       a. Insert the BIOS installation diskette into the A: (B:)
          drive
       b. Boot the PC from the diskette to ensure a clean boot.
       c. Launch the flashing command by typing from A: (B:) the
          following command:

          phlash /V /mode=3 /b=pfmhh106.bin /pf=b hh0105us.ful

3. PARAMETERS (FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY)
---------------------------------------

The following parameters can be used behind the phlash.exe program.

/H displays the help screen with all parameters available
/B Binary file to be loaded as platform.bin
/V Compare BIOS image file and flash EEPROM after
          flashing
/C BIOS will automatically load CMOS default at
          following boot
/P Production mode: no screen ouptuts, no beeps,
          auto reboot
  /S Silent: no beeps
/EXIT Exit to DOS instead of rebooting
/pf=b Standard flash process. The Bootblock is flashed.

Ex: phlash.exe /B=pfmhh106.bin /CS /V /pf=b

4. ERRORS MESSAGES AND WARNINGS
-------------------------------

If you get the flash error messages described below,
  follow the instructions as given:

CANNOT FLASH USING USER PASSWORD, USE ADMIN PWD
it is because you have enabled password on boot and
booted as a user. User boot doesn't allow flashing BIOS.
==> Reboot with your ADMIN password.

  Warning:
  --------

  - Power button is not protected in Safe flashing mode. However,
since the Bootblock is not flashed, shutting down during the flash
     update is not critical.

  - Flashing in crisis mode is blind (no video), except if you
plug an external ISA video card.

  - Since the Bootblock part is not flashed in Safe or Crisis mode,
the Bootblock will still be the one of the old bios.

5. MAKING THE DISKETTE'S LABEL
------------------------------

Texts to be written on diskette's label are given in the
attached "disk.txt" file in the following fields:

6. GLOSSARY
-----------

Bootblock:
----------
this is a part of the Bios EEPROM which contains enough code to allow
the PC to boot on a floppy drive, and then flash the bios.
If the bios is corrupted but the bootblock is OK, the user can still
re-flash his bios (he forces the PC to boot on the floppy by closing
switches 7 and 8).
Refer to section 2.2 for detailed procedure.

Standard flash process :
------------------------
this is the flashing process which updates the entire Bios ROM. If a
main power loss occurs during the flashing process, the bios can be
corrupted and the motherboard may need to be changed.

Safe flashing mode :
--------------------
this is the flashing process which preserves the Bootblock.
This is the one that HP recommends to use. If a power loss occurs
during flashing process, the PC can still recover using Crisis
Recovery flashing process.
Refer to section 2.2

Crisis recovery flash process :
-------------------------------
this is the same as Safe flashing except that the user forces the boot
on the floppy by closing switches 7 and 8.
The bootblock is not flashed.
The video is blank during flash process.
