1. Setup Notes

Step 1. Do not insert the USB plug before setup is completed and instructs you to do so.

Step 2. Before you start using the setup, ensure that you have USB support. Open settings, control panel, system and under device manager you should see that you have the class Universal Serial Bus Controller for USB support. On Windows 95 OSR2.1 and above, the USB support is not typically installed. Consult your manuals on how to install USB support.

Step 3. Run setup to install the software for the UPMOST UPG300.

Step 4. Set the display adapter to 16bit colors for better performance. Note that the driver will not work properly with a setting of 256 colors.

2. Video for Windows Compatibility

The setup installs a video capture driver that is Video for Windows compatible, and a VFW capture application, the AV Recorder. Any other application that is VFW 1.1 compatible can use the VFW capture driver.

The VfW driver supports the overlay mode. However the overlay mode does not display live video during video capture, or video streaming (which is typically used in videoconferencing applications). If you wish to see live video during video streaming select preview mode.

.
3. TWAIN Version 1.6 Compatibility

The setup installs a TWAIN driver that is compatible with TWAIN version 1.6. You may use it with any TWAIN application to capture high resolution high quality still images. The driver displays a preview live video window, and some color adjustment bars. You may capture the still image by pressing the software button.

A twain application - Imaging - is provided by Microsoft as part of the Windows 95 OSR2.1 and Windows 98 operating systems (in the Accessories folder).
 	                                                       	                                                                                                                                                                                                 4. Troubleshooting

The Troubleshooting guide is divided into four categories:
4.1. General
4.2. Installation problems
4.3. Startup
4.4. Runtime problems

4.1. General

1.1 Before you start the troubleshooting process, ensure that USB support is installed on your system.

Open the Control Panel; Click on System; Select Device Manager. You should see the line Universal Serial Bus controller.

4.2. Installation problems

4.3. Startup problems

Problem
When starting a Video for Windows application an error message appears: Could not initialize the capture device, or video capture device is not available.

Solution

1. Make sure that the USB plug is inserted and that the device is listed in the Device Manger.
2. Make sure that your application has selected the proper video capture driver for your device (the Video for Windows capture driver is listed in Control Panel; Multimedia; Advanced; Video Capture Devices). Some applications give you the option to select the video capture device.

4.4. Runtime problems

Problem
The live video display freezes (in both overlay and preview mode whenever you open other applications.

Solution
1. Set the Display Adapter number of colors to 16 bit.
2. Reduce the Hardware acceleration of the PC Display Adapter (this may happen only on several specific display adapter cards). Go to Control Panel and click on Display. Select the Tab Setting, then click on Advanced Properties, select the tab Performance and you will see the Hardware acceleration bar. Reduce the performance to None.

Problem
ACER EasyExpress(TM) application does not display live video while video recordin

Solution
The software selects the Overlay video mode. The UPMOST UPG300 driver does not display live video while recording video or streaming video.

Problem
Live video is spread all over the screen in Overlay mode, after changing the color setting of the Display Adapter.

Solution
Restart the PC and run again the application. Remember to restart the PC whenever you change the color setting of the Display Adapter.

Problem
When capturing live video into the hard disk you get a message at the end stating the a high percentage of frames dropped.

Solution
The performance of capturing live video heavily depends on the performance of the hard disk. If you are using Windows 98, and the hard disk supports DMA mode, make sure that it is enabled (Windows 98 does not enable it by default). Open the Device Manager, select Disk drive; and then double click on your specific disk drive. Select Settings and enable DMA.

Alternatively, you may want to reduce the image size or frame rate. Always select YUV12, as it has the least data per image.

Problem
When booting the PC with the device plugged in, it hangs.

Solution
We have seen it on the following Gateway PCs.
G6-350 - Change the BIOS settings to support USB legacy device.
Solo 5100 - Change the BIOS settings to support USB keyboard.

Problem
USB speaker (or any other isochronous USB device) does not work if the device is pluuged in.

Solution
Verify that the USB speaker works when the device is not plugged in. When the device is plugged in, go to Video Source (with any video capture application), select the Advance Tab, and change the BW slider to 6.0Mbit/sec . Click OK. This will allow the USB speaker to work. If you have several USB devices that need the USB BW, you may need to further reduce the BW.

The device use 7.5Mbit/sec by default.

On Windows 98 OSR1 (or SP1) the available BW is shown. Click on the USB controller in the device manger to get the information.

A. Recommended settings for conferencing software

To get the best performance disable the power management (make sure that the CPU runs at maximum speed, and devices are not shutdown), and set the Screen Saver application not to be activated during videoconferencing.

If you are able to set your videoconferencing software to a specific video format, set it to YUV422 or YUV12 to get the best frame rate (not all the videoconferencing software support these formats).

A.1. Microsoft NetMeeting Version 2.1

The installation sets the Microsoft NetMeeting to work with proper settings for the UPMOST UPG300. Microsoft NetMeeting should be installed before the installation of the UPMOST UPG300 software.

A.2. ACER EasyAxess Version 1.50

1. Insure that the overlay mode is not selected (EasyAxess properties, video).
