READ THIS INFORMATION BEFORE UPGRADING YOUR HAYES ACCURA 56K MODEM TO V.90

First, to maximize your 56K performance, you must make sure your Internet service provider has upgraded to the 56K ITU-T standard and has sufficient V.90 ports for users to call in before you upgrade. If you call multiple locations, you may want to consider making the service provider you call most frequently or spend the most time online with, your guide for whether or not to upgrade.

During the upgrade process, Hayes is providing a "BackFlash" capability, so in the event you need to return to the K56Flex version of firmware, it is readily available.

You need to know some important information before you upgrade your Hayes modem to the 56K ITU-T Standard:
a. The version of 56K your ISP is currently using.
b. The V.90 port telephone number of your ISP.

Steps to Upgrading Your Modem

Step 1: Contact your ISP to find out if they have upgraded to the 56K Standard and whether there are sufficient V.90 ports for users to call in. You should only upgrade your modem to the new ITU-T Standard after your ISP has done so. Find out the telephone number of the V.90 ports of your ISP as it will mostly be different from the number that you are calling today.

Step 2: Ensure that the ACCURA modem that you want to upgrade is installed properly under Windows 95 and note the name of the modem in the Control Panel under the Modem option.

Step 3: Run the file named 5670V90a.exe which is located in the directory where you unzipped the upgrade files. Run this file and follow the prompts.

Step 4: After the upgrade program has installed itself into the hard drive, the Installation main screen will appear. Click on the 'V.90 Standard' icon to start upgrading your modem to V.90. When prompted for the target modem, be sure that you choose the correct modem in the modem list (as noted in Step 3) if you have more than 1 modem installed.

After Upgrading Your Modem

Step 5: Follow these instructions after upgrading your modem in order to use the V.90 features of your modem under Windows 95.

Using the V.90 Features of Your Modem under Windows 95

In Windows 95
Before you begin, make sure your modem is connected and your PC is on and powered-up.

1.	Click on the Start button and select Settings.

2.	Select Control Panel.

3.	Double-click on the Modems icon.

4.	Highlight the modem that you upgraded and click Remove.

Note: If the upgraded modem is the only modem on your system the list should now be blank.

5.	Click on the Start button.

6.	Select Programs and then Windows Explorer.

7.	From the View menu, select Options. (Folder Options in later versions of Windows)

8.	Click on the Show all files button and then click OK. (In later versions of Windows, this option is under the View tab)

9.	Copy the files hay5670x.inf and mdm5670x.inf to a diskette from the directory where you unzipped the upgrade files. Remove the disk.

10.	In your hard drive, double click the Windows directory, and then double-click the Inf directory.

11.	Highlight the file Drvdata.bin and press the Delete key on your keyboard and confirm deletion.

12.	Highlight the file Drvidx.bin and press the Delete key on your keyboard and confirm deletion.

Depending on which version of Windows 95 you have, follow the instructions below according to what you see:

If a subdirectory named Other exists under the Inf directory...

1.	Double click the Other directory.

2.	Locate the files starting with Hayes under the Inf directory.

3.	Starting with the first file, double-click the file.

4.	Scroll down the file until you see the [Strings] section, if your modem (5670) is listed here then close the file and delete it.

5.	If you do not see a [Strings] section or you do not see the name of your modem, close the file but do not delete it.

6.	Continue this process for all Hayes files.

If a subdirectory named Other does not exist under the Inf directory...

1.	Locate the files starting with OEM under the Inf directory.

2.	Each OEM.inf file will have a number after the OEM in the name of the file.

3.	Starting with the first file, double-click the file.

4.	Scroll down the file until you see the [Strings] section, if your modem is listed here then close the file and delete it.

5.	If you do not see a [Strings] section or you do not see the name of your modem close the file but do not delete it.

6.	Continue this process for all OEM.inf files.

Completing the Procedure

1.	While you are still in Windows Explorer, from the View menu, select Options.

2.	Click on the Hide files of these types and click OK. (In later versions of Windows, this option is under the View tab)

Note:	This returns your system to its original settings.

4.	With the modem switched on, restart your computer, the Found New Hardware Wizard will appear.

5.	Insert the diskette created in Step 9 and click Next.

6.	Click Finish.

Step 7: Once your modem is upgraded, dial your Internet Service Provider's V.90 ports, Online Service or other 56K destination number and identify what the connect speed was by selecting the Modem in lower right hand corner of your Windows 95 Taskbar.

If you were connecting previously at rates above 33,600 bits/s and now are consistently connecting at rates at or below 33,600 bits/s, confirm your Internet Service Provider, Online Service or other 56K destination has upgraded to the "ITU-T 56K Standard". Connecting consistently at or below 33,600 bits/s indicates you may be calling a number that has not upgraded to the ITU-T 56K Standard.

Step 8: If you determine you need to go back to the K56Flex version for optimum performance, go back to Step 3 to start the "BackFlash" procedures. Click on the K56Flex icon in Step 4 to start restoring the modem to the K56flex firmware and you'll be back in business. You will not need to downgrade the Inf file, as the new V.90 Inf file includes K56flex commands and results.

If you experience difficulties with this upgrade procedure, firstly check the model number of your modem.
