================================================================================ Name instal95.txt Purpose Installation instructions for the Dipix VxD for Windows 95. ================================================================================ Microsoft Windows 95 Installation Use of the 32-bit XVL Software Product under the Windows 95 operating system requires the installation of a virtual device driver, or VxD. The VxD supports both ISA/VL bus and PCI bus Power Grabber boards. Use of the 16-bit XVL Software Product does not require a VxD and this installation procedure does not apply. The 16-bit XVL Software is installed in the same manner on both Windows 3.x and Windows 95. Microsoft Windows 95 PCI Bus Power Grabber Installation The PCI bus Power Grabber boards support the Windows 95 Plug-and-Play architecture and are automatically configured by the operating system. They are auto-detected on insertion and the system registration entries are automatically removed when the boards are removed from the system. The installation procedures are as follows : Newly Installed PCI Boards 1) Install the XVL Software as outlined in the section entitled "Installing the XVL Software". 2) Shut down and power off the system, install the PCI device(s) in the PCI slots, and power the system back on. 3) On power-up, Windows 95 will automatically detect the presence of the new PCI boards and will issue the message "Windows has found new hardware and is installing the software for it". 4) Then a dialogue window prompts for the location of the software to install. Select the option "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer" and insert the XVL Driver Setup Disk into the floppy drive and follow the directions given by Windows 95. 5) Windows 95 requires that the system be rebooted following installation of the VxD and will prompt for the option of rebooting now or later. The hardware will not be accessible to the VxD until after the system is rebooted. (Note : If multiple Power Grabber PCI boards are being installed, Windows 95 will want the disk for every board. As a short-cut, do not answer "YES" to the reboot prompt until the final PCI board has been configured.) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Previously Installed PCI Boards Customers with pre-existing PCI Power Grabber boards who have been using the 16-bit software without a VxD need to perform a different installation procedure in order to use the VxD. Windows 95 has previously tried to configure the PCI boards and was told not to install a driver. The boards have ended up in the "Unknown Devices" category of the Windows 95 registry. In order to correct this the following procedure is required : 1) Start up the "System" applet in the Windows 95 "Control Panel" program and go to the "Device Manager" page. 2) Click on the "Unknown Devices" class. An entry entitled "PCI Card" will be found here for every unconfigured PCI device in the system. 3) Double-click on each one in turn to obtain the device's property page. Move to its "Driver" page and click on the "Change Driver" button. 4) In response to the resulting dialog box, click on "Have Disk". Windows 95 will prompt for the disk. Insert the XVL Driver Setup Disk in the floppy drive and follow the instructions provided by Windows 95. (Note : If multiple "PCI Card" entries are being updated in the "Unknown Devices" class, Windows 95 will want the disk for every board. As a short-cut, do not answer "YES" to the reboot prompt until the final PCI board has been configured.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Microsoft Windows 95 ISA/VL Bus Power Grabber Installation Since the ISA/VL XPG and FPG Power Grabber Boards do not support the Windows 95 Plug-and-Play architecture, the installation differs from the PCI installation procedure. In order to use the XVL Library with the ISA/VL board complete the following installation procedure: 1) Install the XVL Software as outlined in the section entitled "Installing the XVL Software". 2) Insert the board(s) in the ISA slots. 3) Using the either the START button and its menu or the "My Computer" application, run the program "DPGSetup.exe" from XVL Driver Setup Disk. (I.e. run a:\dpgsetup.exe or double-click on dpgsetup.exe on drive a:). 4) A dialogue window appears that prompts for the number of ISA boards to be identified by the PC. A number can be entered between 0 and 8. Then Press OK. (Entering 0 is a convenient way of removing an ISA/VL Power Grabber from the system.) 5) Then on the next window a unique I/O Port Address and IRQ must be assigned to each ISA/VL device. The address MUST CORRESPOND to the JUMPER SETTINGS on the ISA/VL board. The factory default configuration for all ISA/VL Power Grabbers is address 0x300 and IRQ 11. You can select an I/O Port Address based on the following criteria: - Address must have a 0x hexadecimal prefix (i.e. 0x300 represents 300 Hex). - Address must be a value between 0x100 and 0xff0. - 4 Least Significant Bits of address must be 0 (i.e. 0x100 is OK but not 0x101). You can select an IRQ from one of the following : - 10, 11, 12, 15, 7, 5, 4, or 3. - the IRQ selected must be unique and not used by any other device in the system. 6) A message box will appear indicating that the PC should be rebooted in order to have the new settings take effect. 7) While the PC is re-booting, the following Windows 95 message will appear: "Windows has found new hardware and is installing the software for it". 8) Then a dialogue window prompts for the location of the software to install. Select the option "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer". Insert the XVL Driver Setup Disk and follow the instructions provided by Windows 95. After restarting Windows 95, the VxD should be properly installed on the PC and the board should be fully operational. If the I/O Port Addresses need further modification, run the DPGSetup program again. Microsoft Windows 95 ISA/VL Bus Power Grabber Removal Since the ISA/VL board does not support Plug-and-Play, it is a good idea to remove the device from the Windows 95 registry when the board is removed from the system. The system will still run correctly without removing the ISA/VL device entries. This section is included here for completeness. Two methods can be used to de-install the ISA/VL device. They are : ISA/VL Device Removal Using DPGSetup 1) Run the program "DPGSetup.exe" from the XVL Driver Setup Disk. 2) Enter a value of 0 for the dialogue window that prompts for the number of ISA boards. 3) Once the message box appears prompting to re-boot the PC, you can shut down the PC and remove the ISA/VL Power Grabber Board. ISA/VL Device Removal Using Control Panel 1) Start up the "System" applet in the Windows 95 "Control Panel" program and go to the "Device Manager" page. 2) Click on the "PowerGrabber" class. The ISA/VL PowerGrabber entries are found here. 3) Single-click in order to highlight on the ISA/VL device entry that is to be removed and then click on the "Remove" button. The device is then removed from the registry and cannot be accessed by the VxD until reconfigured by the DPGSetup program. Once the removal procedure is complete, the Windows 95 Registry should be successfully cleared of all ISA/VL Power Grabber related entries. Replacing an Existing VxD with a Newer Version When installing a new release of XVL software the newer version of the VxD needs to be installed, replacing an existing VxD. Two methods exist to upgrade a previous VxD installation : Method 1 : ---------- 1) Start the Control Panel's "System" applet. 2) Move to the panel titled "Device Manager". 3) Click on the PowerGrabber device class, select a PowerGrabber device, and click on "Properties". 4) Move to the "Driver" panel and click on "Change Driver". 5) Follow the instructions prompting for the Device Setup disk. The system will then reboot in order to pick up the new VxD. Method 2 : ---------- 1) Copy the file "dpgrab.vxd" from the Device Setup disk to the directory "\Windows\system" . 2) Reboot the PC to pick up the new VxD. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Replacing V3.01 VxD with V3.10 (or later) VxD for ISA/VL Boards Due to the addition of support for interrupts from ISA/VL Power Grabber boards, changes to the Power Grabber entry in the Windows 95 Registry were required. If you are upgrading from V3.01 (or earlier) to V3.10 of the XVL and are using ISA/VL Power Grabber boards, you must follow the following procedure. 1) Perform the steps outlined in the section "Microsoft Windows 95 ISA/VL Bus Power Grabber Removal" above, to remove all ISA/VL Power Grabber references from the Device Manager. 2) Delete the file dpgrab.vxd from the Windows\system directory. 3) If the system was not rebooted in step 1, reboot it now. 4) Perform the steps outlined in the section "Microsoft Windows 95 ISA/VL Bus Power Grabber Installation" above, to re-install the ISA/VL boards using the new V3.10 software release, specifying the base I/O address and the IRQ required for each board.Download Driver Pack
