OVERVIEW -------- Mpupdate is a utility for upgrading Castelle LANpress print-server firmware. It has an easy-to-use, Windows-compatible user-interface that supports Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. The interface allows you to match the firmware upgrade data file, which is separate, with the print server you want to upgrade. Mpupdate can be installed on a Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation or invoked on a Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation from a floppy disk. The user interface allows you to search the network for the target LANpress unit you want to upgrade. However, the utility can only identify LANpress print servers that are in the same physical segment as the workstation. If the unit you want to upgrade is in a different segment, you must invoke the utility on a workstation in that segment to complete the upgrade. This document describes how to upgrade LANpress MP print server firmware using a Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation. INSTALLING MPUPDATE.EXE ----------------------- 1. Insert the LANpress Firmware Upgrade Utility diskette into your floppy drive. 2. Click Start->Run. Enter drive_id:\setup and click OK. 3. All the MPUPDATE.EXE related files will be copied to your local hard disk, and a program group named "Firmware Upgrade Utility" will be created. DECOMPRESSING THE LANpress FIRMWARE DATA FILES ---------------------------------------------- The information required to upgrade the LANpress print server firmware is stored in model-specific .bin files on the LANpress Firmware Data File diskette. (Note. The version number listed on the diskette indicates the firmware version number.) These files are compressed to fit on the diskette, and you must decompress them on your hard drive before you can use them. This section describes how to decompress the files for use. 1. Open the Windows Explorer and select a hard drive to create a directory for firmware upgrade files. 2. Click on File on the Explorer menu bar and select New then select folder. 3. A New Folder entry appears at the bottom of the drive's file listing. Enter a name, e.g. "LPMP Firmware Upgrade," in the text box and press Enter. 4. Double-click on the drive or folder where you have created the new folder so that it shows on the left-hand page of Explorer. 5. Insert the firmware data diskette into a floppy drive and click on the drive letter in Explorer. 6. Click on Mpfw.exe and drag it to the data file folder. 7. After Mpfw.exe copies to the data file folder, open the data file folder and double-click on Mpfw.exe to decompress the firmware binary files. 8. A DOS screen appears and a bin file is inflated for each LANpress MP model. When the inflation stops, close the DOS screen to display the files in Explorer. UPGRADING THE LANPRESS FIRMWARE ------------------------------- Once the Mpupdate utility and the firmware data files are stored on your workstation, you can upgrade LANpress print servers on the network. This section describes how to upgrade the firmware. 1. Click on Start on the desktop and select Program. 2. Click on the firmware upgrade utility and select mpupdate.exe. The Mpupdate utility user interface appears. 3. Click on File and select Select Binary File or click on the Select (the first) icon. The Open Search window appears. 4. Locate the folder in which you stored the firmware binary (*.bin) files and select the file for the LANpress MP model you want to upgrade. The following table outlines all the binary files and matching LANpress models: MP21_610.BIN LANpress 2+1 MP MP31_610.BIN LANpress 3+1 MP MP1P_610.BIN LANpress 1P MP or LANpress 1P 10BT MP0P_610.BIN LANpress 1P MP (older hardware) MPJR_610.BIN LANpress JR MP MP3P100.BIN LANpress 3P/100 MP1P100.BIN LANpress 1P/100 (Note. These files can only be used to upgrade units that have version 6001 or later firmware. The firmware can be distinguished by its Board Code. To ensure that correct firmware is installed, Mpupdate verifies that the Board Code in the upgrade firmware file and the Broad Code written to the unit's firmware matches. If the codes do not match, the upgrade is terminated. If the unit you want to upgrade has an earlier version of the firmware, you must trade-up the entire unit. Contact your Castelle Sales representative for details.) After you select a file, the File Information page appears. The third entry in the first column provides the firmware version number. Be sure this is the firmware version you want to upgrade to. Click OK to confirm the file selection. 5. Click on Target and select Search or click on the Search button (the second from the left). The utility sends a Search packet over the network to identify available LANpress MP print servers. The print servers that respond are list by serial number in the Select Target for Upgrade page. 6. Select the unit with firmware you want to upgrade. The unit Board Code number must match the firmware Board Code number you selected earlier. Click OK. 7. Click on the Upgrade button (third button from the left). The Prepare for Upgrade dialog box appears. Verify that the firmware binary file and the print server Board Code numbers match. The selected binary file and target LANpress print server appear as the Selected File and the Selected Device. Click the UPGRADE button to start the firmware upgrade process. If the firmware file does not match the target LANpress device, an error message will be shown. The following messages are displayed during the upgrade process: ERASE EEPROM DOWNLOAD PERCENTAGE VERIFY PERCENTAGE COPY FINISH The upgrade process takes approximately two minutes, during which the print server's green and red LEDs blink. After the upgrade completes, the LANpress resets. After the reset, only the green LED blinks to indicate that the print server is ready. If red LED remains on after the upgrade completes, contact Castelle customer support for help.Download Driver Pack
