README Driver File Contents (mjr_13t1.exe)

INTRODUCTION
============
Castelle's LANpress MP products were designed to have FLASH memory for easy
upgrade. Whenever there is a need for firmware upgrade (new features, bug
fixes, etc.), a firmware upgrade diskette will be provided for customers to
remotely upgrade their LANpress units using a PC on the network.

WHAT DOES THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE DISKETTE CONTAIN
===============================================

This diskette contains the following files:

README -

This file.

UPGRADE.EXE -

This is the DOS based firmware upgrade utility.

MPJR_513.BIN -

This is the new firmware binary file used to upgrade your current LANpress
1P MP firmware code. Do not use this binary file to upgrade other models
of the LANpress products. This binary file should be used only for LANpress
JR MP.

NE2000PD.COM -

This is the packet driver for NE2000 Ethernet card.

3C5X9PD.COM -

This is the packet driver for 3Com's 3C509 Ethernet card.

HOW DO I PERFORM THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE
=====================================

Step 1:
-------
You need a PC running DOS version 3.3 or later. You need an Ethernet Card
plugged into the PC, and connected to the network.

Step 2:
-------
Reboot your PC with DOS operating system. Do not load any network drivers
or any TSR programs at the moment. DOS kernel is all you need for now.

Step 3:
-------
The UPGRADE utility uses "packet driver" to perform the firmware upgrade.
Castelle provides you with two Ethernet packet drivers for your selection:
NE2000PD.COM for any NE2000 compatible card & 3C5X9PD.COM for 3Com 3C509
EtherLink III adapter card. If you are not using either of the two cards,
you need to find the packet driver of the Ethernet card you use. Almost
all the Ethernet cards come with a driver diskette which should contain
the packet driver.

Load the packet driver from DOS prompt as follows:

driver_name 0x60 IRQ# PORT#

Example 1:
If you use NE2000 compatible card with IRQ=5 and PORT_ID=300, then you should
load the packet driver as follows:

ne2000pd 0x60 5 0x300

Example 2:
If you use 3Com's EtherLink III card with IRQ=12 and PORT_ID=320, then you
should load the packet driver as follows:

3c5x9pd 0x60 12 0x320

After the packet driver is successfully loaded, your PC is ready to perform
the firmware upgrade.

Step 4:
-------
Before you start upgrading your LANpress 1P MP units, make sure that the
LANpress 1P MP units are on the SAME NETWORK SEGMENT where your PC is
connected. You also need to write down the serial numbers of the target
LANpress units. The serial numbers can be found from the back of each unit.

IMPORTANT, PLEASE BE CAREFUL:
-----------------------------
DURING THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROCESS, ANY INTERRUPTIONS TO THE PC, NETWORK
CABLE OR POWER CABLE CAN CAUSE THE UPGRADE PROCESS TO FAIL, AND THE LANpress
UNIT MAY NEED TO BE SENT BACK TO CASTELLE FOR SERVICE.

Step 5:
-------
Start the UPGRADE utility from your DOS prompt. The syntax of using UPGRADE
is as follows:

UPGRADE MPJR_513.BIN XXXXXX <ENTER>

Where XXXXXX is the last 6 digits of your LANpress MP's serial number.

Example:
If the serial number of your LANpress 1P MP is CTC12345, then you should
enter: UPGRADE MPJR_513.BIN C12345

The messages that the UPGRADE utility would display on your PC include:

Download to CTC12345
Erasing EEPROM. (this takes approximately 20 seconds)
Download BIN file: followed by percentage mark
Download Status: OK!

Step 6:
-------
After upgrade starts, the LANpress unit will flash both the Red and the
Green LEDs. When download finishes, the LANpress unit will be reset and
then starts functioning (Green LED flashing, Red LED off). If the Red LED
stays on for more than 30 seconds, the upgrade process must have failed. You
need to return the unit back to Castelle for service.
