(See list of operating system upgrades below.) This software is not intended for use with Windows 98 Gold. 1. The system must contain either an ICH chipset or a VIA Super South Bridge chipset. 2. One of the following operating systems must be installed on the system: Windows 98SE with QFE 269601* Windows ME 4.90.3000 Windows 2000 With Service Pack 2 (SP2)* Windows XP (Home or Professional) with Q306582* * Please be advised that if you use an earlier Service Pack or QFE (or no Service Pack or QFE), you may experience problems. Some of the problems will prevent the system from getting certified. Please check the Microsoft website for details. For information about changes included in QFE 269601 for Windows 98SE, visit: http://www.osr.com/ddk/aud-design_9gs3.htm For information about changes included in Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000, visit: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http:// support.microsoft.com/support/servicepacks/Windows/ 2000/SP2.asp Note: Microsoft has also released "Compatibility Updates" for Windows 2000 that address problems with specific applications. For a list of affected applications, visit: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/deployment/ appcompat/default.asp SOFTWARE SUPERSEDED: Package Version: ej PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS/FIXED DEFECTS: * Added new Installer design for reduced size package; ZIP file size is now less than 4 MB. * #1704 - Fixes problem where Surround, LFE and Center channels may be muted when using certain CNR cards. The volume returns if the volume sliders for the specific channel are touched, followed by touching the master volume control. The behavior returns (rear chanels are muted) after returning from suspend. This problem was independent of codec, chipset, and OS. * #1720 - Fixed problem where record noise could be heard from the microphone input in 8 bits on ICH4 platforms. This problem affects only ICH4 chipsets. * #1721 - Fixed problem where, on all Via based Platforms, the repeated suspend and resumes may cause the sound to play back fast until another suspend and resume is performed. This problem affects only VIA 686 and VIA 8233 chipsets. * #1794 - Fixed problem where in Simplified Chinese, the "Must be an Administrator" warning is not localized. This occurred when trying to uninstall while logged into a non-administrator account. This problem was independent of codec, chipset, and OS. * #1830 - Fixed problem where the line-in recording is noisy on the Windows moviemaker. This would only happen on platforms where the BIOS does not power up the codec. This problem affects only AD1881A codecs with ICH0, ICH1, ICH2, ICH3, and ICH4 chipsets. * #1833 - Fixed problem where audio was lost upon suspend and resume in Win ME on ICH4 platforms with AD1981a codecs. * #1839 - Fixed problem where audio would be lost upon a suspend/resume. This occurred on systems with an external EQ that gets powered up by the BIOS. This problem affects only 440MX, ICH0, ICH1, ICH2, and ICH3 chipsets. * #1840 - Fixed problem where setup.exe install does not work with a space after the PCI IDs in the INF file. This problem affects only Win 2000 and Win XP. * #1848 - Fixed problem where Clicks and Pops could be heard when playing wave file and the Speaker EQ is enabled. This occurs on 198x CODEC systems with Speaker EQ enabled. This problem affects only AD198x codecs. * #1877 - Added new bitmaps for SoundMAX Cadenza and SoundMAX Flat Driver. * #1900 - Fixed problem where driver is Yellow Banged in the device manager on some ICH4 Platforms with I/O ports disabled. This problem affects only ICH4 chipsets. * #1903 - Fixed problem where setup will hang when trying to install the driver. This occurs only if an INF file is set to read only. Installations from Read-Only media should proceed normally now. This problem was independent of codec, chipset, and OS. * #1910 - Fixed problem where creation of driver version registry entry by install was broken due to the changes in inf file syntax. This problem was independent of codec, chipset, and OS. * #1937 - Fixed problem with error on reboot: "Windows has detected that cleanup.exe has caused an error. Do you want to send this to Microsoft?" . Problem has been discovered on XP Professional. This problem was independent of codec, chipset, and OS. * Made miscellaneous INF changes. ALTERNATE BITCLOCK SUPPORT: As of driver version 5.12.01.3030, support for alternate bitclock and the associated sample rate settings has been added into the WDM driver. The only alternate bitclock frequency supported by the WDM driver is 14.31818 MHz. PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS/DEFECTS NOT COMPLETED IN THIS RELEASE: * N/A KNOWN ISSUES & BUGS: * On certain platforms with 5.12.01.3504, there are known Driver Verifier failures. Please contact ADI to see if this is applicable to your platform or to obtain further details * The AD1886A driver disables the S/PDIF channel for Win98SE and Win2K. * This driver has not been tested on Win XP IA64. A 64-bit driver has been developed and will be tested when platforms are available. * When installing unsigned drivers on certain Windows ME systems, the Microsoft/Intel AC'97 Driver may be loaded instead. The sequence of events that causes this is: - The Microsoft/Intel AC'97 Audio Driver is installed or comes pre-installed on the system. - The system is updated with a signed version of the SoundMAX packages. - The system is updated with an un-signed version of the SoundMAX packages. - Regardless of whether the drivers are uninstalled or updated, the system always comes up with the Microsoft/Intel AC'97 driver. SOLUTION: Microsoft has looked into this issue. Since this only affects Developers/OEM's, only a work-around has been provided as follows: Once you have installed the unsigned driver and the AC'97 Microsoft/Intel driver loads persistently, do the following: 1. Uninstall the Window AC'97 driver using the device manager. 2. Go into the Windows/INF Directory. 3. Delete *.bin. 4. Edit WDMA_INT.INF and comment out (put a semicolon in the first column of) the lines with the offending PNP IDs and then save the changes. 5. Reboot so that the SoundMAX driver is installed. The only other work-around found thus far are to install a signed version of the SoundMAX packages or reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows. * When the AD1886A is configured on a split codec CNR card (i.e., 1886A on CNR and 1885 or 1881A on motherboard), there will be no Audio Out on S/PDIF channel. * Windows XP Only: There is a problem in HCT 10 where test case 16.9:12 fails (Microsoft Errata #582) if logging level is left at 3. Test will pass if logging level is set to 5 or higher. This also occurs with the native driver that ships with Windows XP. * Windows XP Only: There is a problem in HCT 10 RTM where test case 34:1.7 fails on some platforms. This is Microsoft Errata# 625. NOTE: On Windows 98SE, with or without QFEs, the HCT ACPI test cases 7.4 and 7.10 will fail with DX7. This failure also occurs with the Microsoft native driver. Failure will not occur with DX6 or DX8. TESTS RUN: Pre-release and WHQL. *********************************************************************** This driver is built for the Microsoft(R) Windows Operating Systems.
