Firmware for Samsung SM308.txt Driver File Contents (FirmwareforSamsungSM308.zip)

*** Samsung SM-308 bios-rom image-file (firmware) update and flash-eeprom programming utility ***

You should be aware that using an incorrect bios-rom image-file for your drive (or using an inappropriate bios-rom updating-utility) may render the drive inoperable.

This bios-rom image-file probably works for all models of the 308 as they all use the same 512Kb flash Rom, post a comment if it doesn't work for yours.

The Compaq update-utility probably works in all systems, post a comment if it doesn't work for yours.

I found it hard to locate a suitable bios update for this unit, the windows version offered by samsung is in Korean (which explains what most people on driverguide complained about, the on-screen 'garbage' was a lack of Korean text support in their windows environment). The dos version supplied by samsung is ok, and is provided here as a fallback, but this (my) version of this fileset uses a more recent version (supplied by Compaq).

Luckily for us, Compaq fitted this drive to certain models of their Evo system, and, (under their good service policy), they provide a bios-rom image-file for updating the drive (useful for resetting the Rpc2-chnage count), and the associated required flash-eeprom programming utility.

There are five files in this zipfile; Sfdncpq.exe, Sfdndos.exe, T103.BIN, Autoexec.bat, and
Firmware for Samsung SM308.txt (this file).

To use this fileset:
Firstly format a system floppy, either using windows or Dos (or in a dos-window);
-In windows, open 'My Computer', right click on the '3 1/2" Floppy (A:)', select format, then ensure that the box for 'Copy system files' is ticked and click the Start button.
 -In Dos (or a dos-window), type 'format a: /s /q').

Unzip the zipfile (for which you must have WinZip, or a compatible program), then copy the files Sfdncpq.exe, Sfdndos.exe, T103.BIN, and Autoexec.bat to the formatted system floppy.

Insert the formatted system floppy with these files into the system that has the SM-308 fitted, and boot it to this floppy for fully-automatic execution of the compaq-provided utility. The program will skip any drives that do not fit the description it is looking for.

If the compaq-supplied flash utility refuses to work on your system (not being a Compaq (although this was not the case on my Ibm)), use the Samsung-provided utility instead, by editing the file autoexec.bat; substituting the 'sfdncpq.exe' for 'sfdndos.exe' (retain the parameters).

Firmware updates for many other Samsung Cd-Rom, Cd-Rw, Dvd-Rom, and 'Combo' drives are available from (respectively):
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/odd/support/downloads/301232_index.html
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/odd/support/downloads/400054_index.html
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/odd/support/downloads/400055_index.html
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/odd/support/downloads/400058_index.html

You should be able to use the same floppy disk and updating-utility for any Samsung laserdisk device that features a 512Kb flash-rom, but you should ensure that only the correct rom-image is present on the floppy (and no others), and that it is correctly-referenced by the command-line in autoexec.bat.
