  BEFORE YOU BEGIN
  --------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard,
the following notes apply to you:

  1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network
software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal
settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1
under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the
card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions
on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide.

  2. Most network software packages like Windows 95/98, Windows NT,
Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver
that will work with a wide range of network cards. This
generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver,
and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your
network software package asks you to choose the name of
the network card you're installing from a list of available
adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed,
you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose
to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be
ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE
WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If
your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to
use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16
SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off.

 Setup
 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 The Ether16 LAN Card is a plug-and-play
network adapter that is designed to be
automatically detected by Windows 98 as soon
as you insert it into your computer, provided
your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard. If
 your PC isn't plug-and-play, you'll need to
 install the card's software manually.
 Instructions are included below.

Before you begin the installation, you should
have your original Windows 98 CD-ROM
handy. Windows 98 may ask for it in order to
install special files onto your computer during
the network driver setup. When this occurs,
insert your CD-ROM or other media into the
drive and tell Windows 98 to look in the
\win9X directory on the appropriate drive. For
example, if your CD-ROM is drive D: on your
system, and Windows 98 is requesting a file
from it, you would type in D:\win98 and press
Enter in order to inform 98 of the CD-ROM's
location. If Windows 98 came pre-installed on
your computer, you might also be able to find
the files you need in the
 c:\windows\options\cabs folder on your hard
drive if there is one. Some versions of the
Windows 98 CD-ROM may be structured
differently. See your Windows 98 user guide
 for additional information if necessary.

Follow the instructions below to get the
Ether16 LAN Card up and running with
 Windows 98.

Install the Ether16 LAN Card hardware if you
 haven't already.

If your computer has a plug-and-play
 motherboard, skip to the PLUG-AND-PLAY
 section below.
 Otherwise, follow the directions below.

 ETHER16 SETUP WITH
 NON-PLUG-AND-PLAY COMPUTERS

 1. Turn on your computer. Windows 98 may
or may not detect the Ether16 LAN Card's
presence. If Windows 98 displays a New
 Hardware Detected message and indicates
that it has found an NE2000 compatible
network card, skip to step 4 below. If no
message appears, continue with step 2.

 2. Click on Start, followed by Settings, then
 Control Panel. Double-click on Network.
 Click on Add, then Adapter.

Pick Linksys from the list of manufacturers.

Choose Linksys Ether16 LAN Card from the
list of network adapters that appears and click
OK. Highlight Linksys Ether16 in the
following components... box, then click on the
Properties button. Click on the Resources
tab. Change the Interrupt (IRQ) and I/O
address values to match the ones you used
when you ran the SETUP program.

Next, make sure that the following components
are present in the components box. If any
items are missing, use the Add button to add
 them in:

  Client for Microsoft
  Client for NetWare
  Linksys Ether16
  IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
  NetBEUI

Do NOT add the TCP/IP protocol unless you
know how to configure it, or if you are
connecting to a Unix-based system and you
have the settings handy that TCP/IP requires.

 3. Click OK again. Windows 98 will begin
copying the files it needs from your 98 CD-
ROM or installation disks. When the copying
is complete, you will be asked if you want to
restart your computer. Click on Yes. After
your computer restarts, proceed to the File and
 Printer Sharing section below.

 4. If Windows 98 detects an NE2000 network
card, click on Start, Settings, then Control
Panel. Double-click on the System icon and
 choose Device Manager.

Scroll down in the list until you come to
Network Adapters. Double-click on it to
display any installed network cards. Highlight
 NE2000.

Click on the Properties button, followed by
 the Resources tab.

Take the checkmark out of the Use automatic
 settings checkbox.

 Highlight Interrupt Request. Click on
Change Setting. Change the interrupt value to
the same value that you used when you ran the
 SETUP program, then click OK.

 Highlight Input/Output range. Click on
Change Setting. Change the I/O range to the
same value that you used when you ran the
 SETUP program, then click OK.

Make sure that the following components are
present in the components box. If any items
are missing, use the Add button to add them
 in:

	 · Client for Microsoft
	 · Client for NetWare
	 · Linksys Ether16
	 · IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
	 · NetBEUI

Do NOT add the TCP/IP protocol unless you
know how to configure it, or if you are
connecting to a Unix-based system and you
have the settings handy that TCP/IP requires.

When you're finished, click on OK, followed
by OK. When asked if you want to restart
your computer, select Yes. Turn to File and
 Printer Sharing below.

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The instructions below explain how to turn on file & printer sharing in
Windows 98. Before following them, make sure that you have already
installed & configured your Linksys network adapter(s).

  Getting Started
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Start up Windows 98 if you haven't already. Click on the Start button,
followed by Settings, Control Panel, and the Network icon.

  2. Click on the Configuration window tab. If you see File and printer
sharing for Microsoft Networks in the list of items that appears,
close the Control Panel and go to Enabling File Sharing or How to
Share Printers below. Otherwise, go to step 3.

  3. Click on the File and Print Sharing button.

  4. If you want other users to be able to access your files, use your
mouse to put a checkmark next to the I want to be able to give others
access to my files option. If you want others to be able to use
printer(s) that are plugged into your computer, put a checkmark next
to the I want to allow others to print to my printers option.

When you're finished, click on OK. You'll now see a text line that
reads File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks in the
Configuration list box. (If you don't see it, you might need to use
the scroll bars to scroll through the list). Click on OK. When 98
asks if you want to restart your computer, click on Yes.

  Enabling File Sharing
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
After following steps 1-4 above, double-click on your My Computer icon.
A window of available disk drives will appear. Using your right mouse
button, click once on the drive that you want to make available to other
users. Click on Sharing, followed by the Sharing tab. Click on Share As.
In the Share Name box, give your computer a name (you can call it whatever
  you want--Mary's Computer, etc.).

Next, decide on the type of access that you want to give other users.

   * Read-Only access lets other users view the files on your PC.

   * Full access lets users create, change, or delete files on your system.

   * Depends on Password lets users have Read-Only and/or Full access,
depending on the password that you decide to share with them.

Use your mouse to select the type of file sharing access that you want
other users to have. If you want to assign access password(s), type them
into the Password box(es). When you're done, click on the Apply button,
followed by OK. Your drive(s) can now be accessed from other users
whenever they click on their Windows 98 Network Neighborhood icons. If a
user tries to access one of your drives that's password-protected, he or
she will be asked for the appropriate Read-Only or Full access password.

  How to Share Printers
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
After following steps 1-4 above, double-click on your My Computer icon.
Click on the Printers folder. A window of available printers will appear.
