  BEFORE YOU BEGIN
  --------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard,
the following notes apply to you:

  1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network
software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal
settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1
under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the
card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions
on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide.

  2. Most network software packages like Windows 95, Windows NT,
Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver
that will work with a wide range of network cards. This
generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver,
and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your
network software package asks you to choose the name of
the network card you're installing from a list of available
adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed,
you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose
to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be
ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE
WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If
your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to
use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16
SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off.

  Setup
  ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Packet drivers are general drivers used by many operating systems,
especially TCP/IP software packages. If the network system that is
installed specifically mentions support for packet drivers, then
it is likely that it will be able to the provided packet driver
    without problems.

The most important thing to remember when installing packet drivers
is the software interrupt vector. The default interrupt vector for
packet drivers is 0x62 hexadecimal. Most network operating
system supporting packet drivers will try to automatically search for
packet drivers already loaded in the computer's memory. However,
some packages will require a provided interrupt vector for the packet
driver. Furthermore, some packages can only work with certain
interrupt vectors. which require a software interrupt vector parameter
when loading. Please see the section at the end of this document for
    description on packet driver parameters.

Since the Ether16 Ethernet adapters are software configurable,
the packet driver will automatically detect the hardware parameters.
If the packet driver can properly read the adapter's MAC address during
loading, then the hardware is normally working properly.

 User's Guide
 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

The packet drivers are located on the Ether16 disk 1 under the
PKTDRV directory. Both SYS and COM versions of the driver
are included--you can use either method. The SYS version is
for use in the CONFIG.SYS file, while COM is for use in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT. Their syntax is as follows:

    DEVICE = ETHER.SYS [/option] <packet_int_no>
                        or
    ETHER.COM [/option] <packet_int_no>

    Packet Driver Parameters:

<packet_int_no> is the software interrupt vector number used by the
packet driver program. This can be from 96 to 128.

        [/option] includes the following:

        /? Show available parameters
/d Delay Initial - The driver program will not initialize
the network interface card until the packet driver program
is accessed by its upper layer program.
/w The -w parameter is for use only in the Windows environment.
        /u Unload the packet driver.
/n NetWare conversion. Convert 802.3 packets to 8137 packets
        /auto Automatically detect connected media.
                   * This is the default setting for media type.
/utp Switch media type to UTP.
/bnc Switch media type to BNC.
/aui Switch media type to AUI.
                   * If the selected media type does not exist on the adapter,
the driver will automatically detect the connected media.
/sa Search all Ether16 Ethernet adapters. If there is more
than one Ethernet card in the system, the driver will
ask you to select which card to work with.
                   * The default setting is to work with the first detected
                     adapter.
        /earlytx Enable early transmit option.
                   * The default setting is disabled.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
