From an MS-DOS window in Windows 95, 98, ME, or from the command prompt in
Windows 2000 or NT, you can run PHLASH16.EXE with options for doing such
things as:

1. Flash a new BIOS to your system
2. Backup existing BIOS before flashing
3. Verify the new BIOS checksum
4. Flash only if new image is more recent than existing BIOS
5. Minimize messages and delays
6. Verify BIOS number before flashing
7. Do not flash, but read existing flash part and save to a file
8. Disable Axx autodetection.

To flash a new BIOS, you need a BIOS file, which usually comes with this program and has the extension ".WPH", for example, "BIOS.WPH". The flash operation always backs up the existing BIOS to a file. The default file name is "BIOS.BAK". You can specify a different name for this file using the /BU option described below.

The following describes the command-line prompt commands for PHLASH16.EXE.

Syntax:

PHLASH16 [options] [romfile]
Arguments:

romfile:
Override the default BIOS file, "BIOS.WPH," with a file
       of a different name.

options:
/BU[=filename] Backup flash memory into filename before programming.
               Default filename=BIOS.BAK.

/C Clear CMOS checksum after programming, causing an update of
CMOS with the default BIOS values.

/CS Checksum the BIOS file. If checksum fails, the operation is terminated
               with an error message.

/H or /?	Display the help screen.

/I Proceed only if image size matches the size of the flash part.

/MFG Manufacturing mode - Automatically reboot without waiting for a
key press after flash to reboot the system.

/N Program only if the BIOS file contains a
different BIOS image than the current one.

/NOB Do not allow an older BIOS to be flashed to the platform.

/NOBIOSINFO Do not display bios date and part number while flashing.

/O Override (disable) all options from the BIOS file.
This switch ignores all commands in this file and uses only
the command-line options. Without this switch, the program uses
the commands in BIOS.WPH not overridden by the command-line options.

/P Production mode (minimize messages and delays).

/PN Program only if same BIOS part number.

/RO[=name] Read contents of flash part and save to name. No flash performed.

/Rn Retry flashing a block n times if flash fails.

/S Silent operation (turn off speaker).

/SWAP=NO Disable Axx autodetection (the default enables Axx autodetection).

/V Verify each block after programming it. After the program writes each
block, it compares data in the flash-part address space with the data
                in the BIOS.

/Z Zero-out content before erasing a block in the flash part.

If PHLASH16 discovers any discrepancies, it displays them on the screen. Depending on the user's response to a prompt, either Phlash16 re-tries programming the same block, or the system halts.

WARNING! Because both flash programs perform the data-integrity check after it erases the flash memory, the system may become unstable and hang. If this should occur, you must reboot the system with the Crisis Recovery Diskette, using the instructions from the manufacturer of your system.
