==================================================== Package Contents: ---------------- SuSE Linux support is provided in the form of driver update disks and/or in the form of a RPM. Driver update disks are available for those versions of SuSE where the Fusion-MPT driver is either not bundled or is a version earlier than 2.01.10. For all other versions, please use the bundled driver for installation and the RPM to update the driver post-installation. Update Disks available for: 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, SLES7 (i386, default, SMP, PSMP builds) RPMS available for: 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, SLES7 (i386, default, SMP, PSMP builds) 8.1 (athlon, default, SMP, PSMP builds) Binary support may be provided for: 7.2 IA64 UP and SMP builds. Contents: x86 Systems - Upgrading the Driver During Installation ia64 Systems - Upgrading the Driver During Installation Post-Installation Binary Updates ==================================================== SuSE 8.1: ========= The SuSE 8.1 installer contains a bug that modules dependencies are not honored in the creation of the ramdisk image. If you install to a driver that contains dependencies, installation will be successful but reboot will fail. There are two possible workarounds: Workaround #1: Transfer the image mk_initrd_SuSE81.img to a diskette using dd or raw-write, # dd if=mk_initrd_SuSE81.img of=/dev/fd0 At the boot screen, press the "Alt" key. This will tell the installer to use an installer update disk. Workaround #2: An Alternative (but ugly method) 1. Install as normal but do NOT remove the installation media from the CDROM on the first reboot. 2. Reboot to CD and restart the installation. You _must_ select "Installation". Do NOT select "Boot Installed OS" as that will fail. Re-enter the language, etc. After the installer has rescanned the system (where it will load the driver again), a pop-up menu will be presented giving you the option to boot an installed OS. Select this option. 3. Finish your installation. 4. After the installation is complete, log in as root and # cd /etc/sysconfig # vi kernel < insert the word: mptbase prior to the word mptscsih. INITRD_MODULES="mptscsih reiserfs" becomes INITRD_MODULES="mptbase mptscsih reiserfs" > # mk_initrd 5. You should be able to reboot safely at this point. Remark: Some systems require that the command: pci=acpi be part of the boot options. If your system does not reboot. Please check the SuSE website for more details. SuSE 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, SLES7 ================================= x86 Systems - Upgrading the Driver During Installation ------------------------------------------------------ Step 1: Transfer the driver disk image to a diskette using dd or raw-write, # dd if=suse.img of=/dev/fd0 Step 2: Begin the normal installation procedure. Once syslinux has booted, press the `ALT' key. When prompted, enter the diskette and press `Enter'. SuSE 7.3 and 8.0 Workaround: ============================ The SuSE 7.3 and 8.0 installers contain a bug that prevents reboot if a driver update disk is utilized. Please follow the workaround directions below. Step 2a: After "The LILO boot sector has been written to disk" message, hit Ctl+Alt+F2 At this screen enter the following commands: cp /update/install/update.tar.gz /mnt/var/tmp chroot mnt tar xvzf /var/tmp/update.tar.gz mk_initrd lilo After this hit Alt + F7 and select 'Ok' to continue with the installation as normal. Step 3: Continue with normal installation. ia64 Systems - Upgrading the Driver During Installation ------------------------------------------------------- Remark 1: SuSE 7.2 for IA64 was released prior to the release of the Fusion-MPT driver, hence the driver is not bundled. The following procedure should be used to install to a disk controlled by a Fusion-MPT device. Remark 2: SuSE 7.2 for IA64 was released prior to the development and release of the Tiger platforms. Remark 3: * Recommend that the latest FW be used (> 1.0.16) * Installation to an upgraded or new Tiger2 platform hung during APIC mappings. 0. Create a driver update CD-ROM. Extract the suseia64-7.2-<driver version>.tar.gz to a local directory. That is: $ tar xzvf suseia64-7.2-<driver version>.tar.gz will create suseia64-7.2-<driver version> | |_ linux.tar.gz Extract the linux.tar.gz tar ball to create a directory tree, where the top level directory is "linux". Write the entire "linux" tree to a CD-ROM. 1. Boot to the EFI Shell. Shell > 2. Boot linux using the expert mode: Shell > fs0: <enter> fs0: \> elilo <enter> ELILO boot: linux expert=2 <enter> ***** IMPORTANT ***** 3. The installer will load and will perform a scan of the system. Since the Fusion-MPT controller is not bundled, the disks attached to this controller will not be found. Consequently the installer will display the following screen: __________________________________________________________ | Error | | | | No hard disk could be found for installation | | Please check your hardware | | | | OK | |_________________________________________________________| Press OK to continue. The screen will clear and the manual installation menu will appear: __________________________________________________________ | | | Main menu | | Settings | | System Information | | Kernel modules (hardware devices) | | Start Installation / System | | End / Reboot | |_________________________________________________________| Highlight the "Start Installation / System" selection and press enter. The next menu provides a list of options, __________________________________________________________ | Start Installation / System | | | | Start Installation / update | | Boot Installed System | | Start Rescue System | | Eject CD | | Driver Update CD | |_________________________________________________________| highlight the option "Driver Update CD" and press enter. (You must have entered "expert=2" when Linux was booted for this option to appear.) The installer will now display the screen: __________________________________________________________ | | | Please insert the Driver Update CD-ROM | | OK | |_________________________________________________________| Remove install CD1 from the CD-ROM drive and insert the driver update CD-ROM. Press "OK" when complete. The installer will then display two more screens: __________________________________________________________ | Trying to mount the CD-ROM | |_________________________________________________________| (this may take a little time) and then a final screen: __________________________________________________________ | Driver Update OK | | OK | |_________________________________________________________| 4. At this point, the installer has loaded the driver off of the CD-ROM. Remove the driver update CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive and re-instert install CD1. The "Start Installation / System" menu will be displayed again. __________________________________________________________ | Start Installation / System | | | | Start Installation / update | | Boot Installed System | | Start Rescue System | | Eject CD | | Driver Update CD | |_________________________________________________________| Begin the installation by highlighting "Start Installation / update" selection and pressing enter. The installer will mount the install CD1 and then continue with the standard SuSE installer. 5. When the screen __________________________________________________________ | | | The LILO boot sector has been written | | OK | |_________________________________________________________| appears, perform the following steps: CTL+Alt+F2 # chroot mnt # vi /etc/rc.config search for the line: INITRD_MODULES="" and add the Fusion-MPT driver. For example, INITRD_MODULES="qla1280" becomes INITRD_MODULES="qla1280 mptbase mptscsih" # mk_initrd ALT+F7 Press OK to continue. Post-Installation Binary Updates --------------------------------- Step 1: Extract the binary images stored in the tar archive to /lib/modules. # cd / # tar xzvf <path to update.tar.gz>/update.tar.gz Step 2: SuSE 7.3, 8.0, SLES7. Proceed to Step 3. Step 2: SuSE 7.2 i386 and ia64 ====================== You must manually update /lib/modules/<kernel>/modules.dep by appending the contents of depends-<kernel>. For example, to update to /lib/modules/2.4.4/modules.dep # cat depends/depends-2.4.4 >> /lib/modules/2.4.4/modules.dep x86: Repeat the above for the 2.4.4-4GB, 2.4.4-4GB-SMP and 2.4.4-64GB-SMP kernels. ia64: The depends directory is located at: linux/suse/ia64-7.2 on the driver update CD-ROM. Repeat for the 2.4.4-SMP kernel. Step 3: The Fusion MPT drivers may now be installed using insmod or modprobe, i.e., # insmod mptbase # insmod mptscsih or # modprobe mptscsihDownload Driver Pack
