\HELP\WINNT\NT40.TXT NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter ----------------------------------------- Driver Installation for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 ------------------------------------------------ Getting Started --------------- The Windows NT CD-ROM or diskettes are needed for the following procedure. Installation Procedure ---------------------- 1. Insert the FA310TX network adapter into your computer and start your Windows NT 4.0 system normally. 2. Open "My Computer" -> "Control Panel" -> "Networks" icons. 3. Select "Adapters" -> "Add" -> "Have disk". Enter the drive letter where the Drivers and Diagnostics disk is inserted. eg. > A:\ Select the "NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI adapter". 4. Windows NT will copy the driver files from the WINNT directory. It also will pop up with the configuration window. You can assign the "Connection Type", "Transmit Threshold" and "Network Address" here. For "Connection Type", choose "AutoSense". The driver will auto- detect the media that is connecting to the adapter. Other possible connection type selections are "10Base-T", "10Base-T full_duplex", "100Base-TX", and "100Base-TX full_duplex". For "Transmit Threshold", choose "256 Bytes". The smaller the transmit threshold, the better the adapter's transmitting performance is. The default value "256 Byte" is suited to most computers with Pentinum or better processors. If you are using a computer with 486 processor, please choose the "Store and Forward" selection. Other possible transmit threshold selections are "Store and Forward", "36 Bytes", "72 Bytes", "96 Bytes", "128 Bytes", and "160 Bytes". Caution: Unless necessary, do not modify the NetworkAddress field. The driver will use the default unique Ethernet address contained in the serial ROM on the adapter. 5. After completing the file copying process, Windows NT will prompt you to reboot the PC. Select YES to reboot the system. Creating Netwrok Client Installation Disks on Windows NT Server --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Open the Network Client Administrtor from "Start" -> "Administrator Tools" -> "Netwrok Client Administrator" 2. Click Make Installation Disk Set, then click OK. 3. In the "Share Network Client Insatllation Files" dialog box, fill in the path and shared files. Click OK. Then, the "Make Installation Disk Sets" dialog box will appear. 4. Prepare 3 or 4 (depending on the network client type you choosen) formatted, high density disks and insert one into a floopy driver. 5. In Select Network Client, click the type of disks that you want to creat and specify the destination driver and then click OK. 6. Following the instruction on the screen and keep inseting additional disks in the drive until a message box is dispalyed indicating that all the files have been copied. 7. For more information, please refer to the on line help. Make Netwrok Installation Startup Disk on Windows NT Server --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If you install the Microsoft Client for the first time, please open the "Network Client Administrator" item. Otherwise, please directly go to step 3. 2. Install the installation files of Microsoft Client into the hard disk. (for examples : C:\CLIENTS) a) Select the "Make Installation Disk Set" item, then click "OK" button. b) In the "Share Network Client Installation Files" dialog box, select the "Copy Files to a New Directory, and then Share" item. Then click "OK" button to begin the file copying. c) After the completion of file copying, exit the "Network Client Administrator". 3. Please edit the WCNET.INF file as below (It should be at the path "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP") : a. Find the section listed below ----------------------------------------- [netcard] ; key = description, MSID, type, media, mode, install, protini, style ----------------------------------------- b. Append the following line ----------------------------------------- FA310="NETGEAR FA310TX",999,ndis,ethernet,0x01,FA310,FA310_nif ----------------------------------------- c. Find the section listed below ----------------------------------------- ; ; Netcard Install and Protocol Sections ; ----------------------------------------- d. Append the following two sections ----------------------------------------- ; NETGEAR FA310TX [FA310] ndis2=1:FA310.dos [FA310_nif] drivername=FA310$ param=DATA_RATE,"[NDIS2] Line Speed 10M/100M",text,"MB10,MB100","MB10",0x12 param=SIA_MODE,"[NDIS2] AutoSense/Half/Full Duplex",text,"AUTOSENSE,TP,TP_FULL_DUPLEX","AUTOSENSE",0x12 ----------------------------------------- 4. Please edit the WCSETUP.INF file as below (It should be at the path "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP") : a. Find the section listed below ----------------------------------------- [netdrivers] ----------------------------------------- b. Append the following line at the end of the section ----------------------------------------- 1=,FA310.dos,,FA310.dos, ----------------------------------------- 5. Copy the NDIS 2 driver "FA310.DOS" in the "A:\NDIS2DOS\" to the directory "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP". 6. Open the Network Client Administrtor. 7. Click the "Make Network Installation Startup Disk", then click "OK". 8. In the "Target Workstation Configuration" dialog box, select the "Network Client v3.0 for MS-DOS and Windows" item of the "Network Client" list box. 9. Select the "NETGEAR FA310TX" item of the "Network Adapter Card" list box. Then click "OK" button. 10. Insert a MS-DOS bootable floppy diskette to the drive A:. 11. In the "Network Startup Disk Configuration" dialog box, specify the setting of your startup diskette. Then click "OK". 12. Now, the system will copy the related files to the floppy diskette. 13. After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
