Crystal Audio Windows 98 Driver Installation

The following instructions detail how to install the Crystal Audio driver, version 2.72.
Please note that this procedure is for the Windows 98 operating system only.

You may wish to print these instructions for future reference.

The Crystal Audio driver is loaded with an executable file named "Setup.exe".
This file is located on the Digital System CD, in the directory/folder \Drivers\Win98\Audio.
To locate this file and install the driver, perform the following steps:

1. Place the Digital System CD in the CD drive.

2. Browse to the driver file location:
* From the Windows 98 Desktop, double-click the "My Computer" icon.
The "My Computer" window appears.
* In the "My Computer" window, double-click the icon representing your CD-ROM drive.
This will usually be labeled "E:" but can be other letters.  The icon will have a small picture of a CD on it.
The "My Computer" window should change to a window labeled "E:" (as appropriate for your system.)
* Double-click the "Drivers" folder.
* Double-click the "Win98" folder.
* Double-click the "Audio" folder.
There should be several files in the "Audio" folder - including "Setup.exe".  It may display as simply "Setup".

3. Perform the installation process.
* Double-click the "Setup.exe" file.
The "Crystal Install/Uninstall" window appears.
* In the "Crystal Install/Uninstall" window, click the "Install Driver" button.
An untitled window appears, notifying you that your system needs to be restarted to complete installation.
* Remove any floppy disk from the floppy drive.
* Open the CD drive door, but do not remove the system CD yet.
* In the unlabeled window, click the "Restart" button to reboot the system.

4. Continue the driver installation after reboot.
* Allow the system to begin booting Windows 98.
* Once the Windows 98 graphics begin to appear, close the CD drive door with the System CD inside.
A "New Hardware Found" window displays.
A "Building driver information database" window displays and disappears.
"Add New Hardware Wizard" window appears.
The text reads "This wizard searches for new drivers for MS Windows Sound System Compatible"
* In the "Add New Hardware Wizard" window, click "Next".
The text in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" window changes to "What do you want Windows to do?"
* Select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location..."
* Click "Next".
The "Add New Hardware Wizard" window changes to display a list of "Models".
* Click "Show all hardware".
* Click "Have Disk" button
The "Install From Disk" window appears.
* Click "Browse".
The "Open" window appears.
* Under Drives, select the CD-ROM drive.
* Under Folders, double-click "Drivers", then "Win98", and then "Audio".
The file "CWDAUDIO.INF" should appear in the File name box in the "Open" window.
* Click "OK".
* At the return to the "Install From Disk" window, click "OK".
The "Select Device" window appears, with "Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC" selected.
(If "Show All Devices" remains selected, ensure "Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC" is the selection.)
* Click "OK".

5. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" window now returns.
The text should now read:
"Windows driver file search for the device Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC ... 
"Windows is now ready to install the selected driver..."
* Click "Next".
The "Copying Files" window appears as the files copy.
After the files copy, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" window will reappear.
The text should read:
"Windows has finished installing the software you selected that your new hardware device requires."
* Click "Finish".
Another "New Hardware Found" window displays some information, but requires no action to be taken.
When this window disappears, your audio drivers will be completely installed.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
