display, refer to the items in <About Error Messages Displayed
When Installing, Setting, and Deleting Drivers> to determine and
correct the error.
If a different dialog box appears, correct the problem according
to the directions that accompany the error message.
If no error message is displayed, it may indicate that a file you
are trying to install is damaged; install using intact files.
Q: Serial MIDI Device does not appear in "MIDI Music Playback" settings
in "Sounds and Multimedia" or "Sounds and Audio Devices."
A: It may be that the device is not being recognized properly by
Windows.
Refer to the steps described in <Reinstalling the Driver> to
reinstall the driver.
Q: Multiple ports (such as "Roland Serial MIDI Out B") are not shown in
the MIDI device display.
A: These will not appear unless you enable "Use multiple ports" in the
driver setting. To change the setting, refer to the explanation in
<Changing and viewing the driver settings>.
Q: Can't record/play back.
A-1: The MIDI device settings could be incorrect.
Refer to the explanation in <Before you use the driver with the
Windows Media Player>, and set the device correctly.
You will also need to make MIDI device settings in your software.
In this case, refer to the manual for your software, and set it so
it recognizes the device.
For the device name of the Roland serial MIDI driver, refer to the
explanation in <Before you use the driver with an application> section.
A-2: The computer cable between the sound generator and the computer
may not be connected properly, or there may be a short in the
cable. Check the cable.
A-3: The settings for the sound generator's computer switch may not be
correct.
The computer switch of the sound generator must be set to the
position indicated in "Driver's information" of the "Roland serial
MIDI driver settings" dialog box.
For instructions on how to confirm this setting, refer to the
explanation in the section <Changing and Checking Driver Settings>.
Additionally, when changing settings, first turn off the power to
the sound generator, then after making the setting changes, turn
the power to the sound generator on again.
A-4: The serial port settings may be incorrect.
Check to see if the serial port set in "COM Ports" and the serial
port to which the sound generator is connected are different.
For instructions on checking "COM Ports," refer to the steps
described in <Changing and Checking Driver Settings>.
Q: Playback and recording are lagging...
A-1: When attempting to record large amounts of MIDI data, processing
of the data may not completed in time, resulting in recording that
is delayed.
Reduce the amount of data being recorded.
A-2: Make the following settings.
Performance may be improved.
1. Open the "Control Panel" and double-click "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and
Maintenance," and click the "System."
2. In Windows 2000, click the "Advanced" tab, and then click the
"Performance Options" button.
In Windows XP, click the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings"
button in "Performance," and then click the "Advanced" tab.
3. Select "Background services," and click the "OK" button.
4. Click the "OK" button to close "System Properties."
Q: Playback stops momentarily...
A: This may happen when many programs are running simultaneously.
Quit any programs that aren't currently necessary.
Q: When playing back MIDI data, the sounds are not played back normally,
odd things happen with the sound generator settings, and error
messages like "MIDI Buff. Full" and "Check Sum Error" appear in the
sound generator display...
A: This sort of problem occurs when there is a mistake in the Exclusive
Data or with Exclusive Data with short transmission intervals.
Try checking the data.
Q: The computer cable connecting the sound generator was unplugged or
switched during recording or playback of MIDI data...
A: There is not particular problem if at the time "Activate CTS/RTS
Flow Control" was set to the default value (not enabled).
If the cable becomes disconnected, immediately stop recording or
playback, then reconnect the cable.
If at the time "Activate CTS/RTS Flow Control" is enabled and you
then reconnect the computer cable in this condition, all send and
receive data accumulated in the buffer is sent to the sound
generator or program at one time, which may result in malfunction
and errors.
In this case, first stop recording or playback, quit any programs
using the Serial MIDI Driver, then reconnect the computer cable.
Whether set to enable or disable, do not disconnect or reconnect the
computer cable while recording or playing back MIDI data.
Q: I can't run more than two MIDI programs at the same time.
A: Multiclient capabilities extend to a maximum of two programs.
Only up to four programs may be run simultaneously using the same
MIDI port.
Q: A program using the Serial MIDI Driver quit unexpectedly...
A: Since the Serial MIDI Driver did not quit normally, some kind of
malfunction may have occurred.
Quit all programs and restart Windows.
Q: After closing programs using the Serial MIDI Driver, the serial port
cannot be used by other programs...
A: For some reason, the serial port has not closed normally.
Quit all programs and restart Windows.
Q: I happened to start up a program called "rdsmidnt.exe"...
A: Do not start up the "rdsmidnt.exe" program by itself.
If it has been started, you need to quit all programs and restart
Windows.
Q: I closed the "rdsmidnt.exe" program when using the Serial MIDI
Driver...
A: Do not close the "rdsmidnt.exe" program when using Serial MIDI
Driver.
If "rdsmidnt.exe" is closed, then quit all programs and restart
Windows.
Q: I opened a program called "rdsmidnt.exe" when using Serial MIDI
Driver...
A: The "rdsmidnt.exe" program is a support program that opens and
closes with the Serial MIDI Driver.
Q: I don't know whether or not the "rdsmidnt.exe" program is running.
A: As this program has no window, in normal conditions you will not
know that it is running.
This program is a background program, so it is invisible.
Q. I removed the serial MIDI driver, but it still appears under "Legacy
Audio Drivers."
* This situation could have been caused by one of the following:
1. You used the Windows NT 4.0 installer to install the serial
MIDI driver.
2. You upgraded to Windows 2000/XP after installing the serial
MIDI driver in Windows NT 4.0.
In situations such as these, there should be no problem with the
functioning of the serial MIDI driver, but the driver will no have
been completely removed.
A. Install the driver as explained in the section <Installing the
Driver - 1>, and then perform the procedure given in <Uninstalling
the Driver>. This will completely remove the serial MIDI driver.
Q. During installation of the serial MIDI driver, I clicked the "Cancel"
button in the "Roland Serial MIDI Driver Settings" dialog box.
A. In this case, the settings will not be made, so the driver will not
function.
Restart Windows, and make driver settings again as described in the
section <Changing and Checking Driver Settings>.
