3Com (R) Corporation
EtherDisk (R) Diskette for the
3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master NIC Family
Windows 98 Information

(X denotes 0 or 5 for the 3C900(B) and 3C905(B) NICs)

3Com has observed that on some PC's, depending on the previous version of Windows
that was installed and/or the machine's configuration, users may encounter
difficulties during NIC installation. On occasion Win 98 fails to properly
integrate all of the parameters into the registry resulting in a misconfiguration of
network services. If you encounter installation problems
follow the steps below to properly install the NIC.

When installing Windows 98 or upgrading Windows 95 to Windows 98 on a
computer with a 3C905 or 3C905B installed, you must remove all the 3C90X(B)
software from the system and reinstall it from the EtherDisk diskette that
comes with your NIC. You must follow these steps after the complete
installation or upgrade of Windows 98.

After the installation or upgrade, go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->
System->Device Manager->Network Adapters and highlight the 3C90X(B) NIC.
Then hit the "Remove" button to remove the NIC software from the system. If
no NIC entry is found under Device Manager->Network Adapters the NIC entry
may appear under Device Manager->Other with the name "PCI Ethernet Adapter".
Remove this entry instead.

Reboot the system. When Windows 98 detects the 3C905(B), provide the
EtherDisk diskette as instructed.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO UPDATE THE DRIVER ON A NIC LABELED WITH A "?"
OR "X" ON THE DEVICE. You must first delete and then reinstall the NIC with the diskettes
provided by 3Com.

If you do not follow this procedure, you may see one of the following problems:

1. In Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager the NIC will
be marked with a yellow question mark or red X.

2. The NIC will not be present in Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network.

3. The computer will not correctly operate on the network.

4. When starting the computer, a blue screen will appear and the system will
stop. When this happens, the computer must be restarted in "safe mode"
and the NIC software must be removed as described above.
