The Adaptec AHA-1540C/1542C, in its default configuration, is 100% compatible
with the AHA-1540B/1542B. There are new features in the AHA-1540C/1542C that
are not backwards compatible with the AHA-1540B/1542B. For example, on the
AHA-1540C/1542C, you could have disk drives at SCSI ID #0 and SCSI ID #4 and
choose to boot from SCSI ID #4. The AHA-1540B/1542B can only boot from
SCSI ID #0. Problems can arise if you load an older device driver that
assume we boot from SCSI ID #0.

Many software packages already support all features of the AHA-1540C/1542C,
including Adaptec EZ-SCSI v1.0 and later, OS/2 2.1, etc. If you enable an
AHA-1540C/1542C feature (e.g. dynamic scan) that may not be compatible with
AHA-1540B/1542B software, and you use older software, the host adapter will
suspend operation to protect you from data loss.

There are some situations where a new AHA-1540C/1542C feature will still work
with older drivers. For example, you can enable "dynamic scan" on the
AHA-1540C/1542C with NetWare 386, and the older drivers are not affected by
this. But since the older NetWare 386 disk drivers were written before the
AHA-1540C/1542C came out, the host adapter will suspend operation. This
is where ULK1540C.SYS may come in handy.

ULK1540C.SYS is a DOS device driver that you load anywhere in your
CONFIG.SYS. It simply unlocks the host adapter mailbox to force the
host adapter not to suspend operation when older device drivers are
detected. It takes up NO memory! There are two command line switches:

/P{port} If you do not use this command line switch, the host adapter
will default to port 330h. If your AHA-1540C/1542C is
set for a different port address, you must use this command
		line switch. For example:

		device=c:\scsi\ulk1540c.sys /p334

/PAUSE This option makes your system pause after UKL1540C.SYS runs
at boot-time so you can read the message that appears on the
		screen.

If ULK1540C.SYS was unable to unlock the mailbox, one of the following error
messages may appear:

-> Invalid entry for '/p' setting

Only port addresses 330, 334, 230, 234, 130, 134 are supported.

-> Unable to initialize host adapter mailboxes
-> Unable to read configuration from host adapter

Make sure there are no hardware conflicts within your PC, the host adapter
is properly configured, and that the host adapter is securely inserted.
Check SCSI bus termination, SCSI parity, and cabling.

-> An AHA-1540C/1542C is NOT present at port xxx

There is no AHA-1540C/1542C at the give port address. Make sure there are
no hardware conflicts within your PC, the host adapter is properly
configured, and that the host adapter is securely inserted.

WARNING: Using older drivers that do not know how to properly handle the
advanced features of the AHA-1540C/1542C could lead to data loss or
corruption. Use this utility with caution.

*****************************************************************************

VHDFMT.EXE is the floptical format utility for the AHA-1540CF/1542CF. This
utility allows for the formatting of 21 MByte floptical Very High Density
(VHD) media. It is not intended for use with 1.44 MByte and 720 KByte media.
The DOS format.com program is available for those media types. The
VHDFMT.EXE utility creates a new root directory and File Allocation Table
(FAT) for the diskette. It must have access to the DOS format.com utility
through the DOS path command or the default directory where VHDFMT.EXE is
invoked.

*                         %%% VHDCOPY.EXE %%%                               *
*****************************************************************************

VHDCOPY.EXE is the floptical copy utility for the AHA-1540CF/1542CF. This
utility copies the contents of the VHD diskette in the source drive to
a formatted (low-level) VHD diskette in the destination drive and replaces
the DOS diskcopy utility for this purpose. This utility works on VHD
diskettes only. To copy 1.44 MByte and 720 KByte floppies on floptical
drives, use the standard DOS diskcopy utility.

*****************************************************************************
*                         %%% VHDCOMP.EXE %%%                               *
*****************************************************************************

VHDCOMP.EXE is the floptical compare utility for the AHA-1540CF/1542CF. This
utility compares the contents of two VHD diskettes and replaces the DOS
diskcomp utility for this purpose. This utility works on VHD diskettes only.
To compare 1.44 MByte and 720 KByte floppies on floptical drives, use the
standard DOS diskcomp utility.

*****************************************************************************
*                         %%% VHDMODE.EXE %%%                               *
*****************************************************************************

VHDMODE.EXE is the floptical mode utility for the AHA-1540CF/1542CF. This
utility sets DOS internal drive parameters of a floptical drive for standard
(1.44 MByte) or VHD (21 MByte) parameters. This utility allows certain ill-
behaved applications to run using VHD parameters. Applications that do not
read a diskette's BIOS Parameter Block (BPB) from the disk's boot sector will
generally fail on VHD media.

An example of such an application is the Norton Disk Doctor(R), Version 6.0.
It only runs whenever the drive default parameters are set for VHD media.
It is recommended that the VHD internal parameters be reset back to standard
after running applications that require VHD parameters.

There is no assurance that vhdmode.exe will allow all ill-behaved app-
lications to run. Some applications go directly to the ROM BIOS to obtain
a drive's parameters instead of using DOS INT 21h services. These app-
lications will fail even after running VHDMODE.EXE

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
