HOW TO UPGRADE THE ACCESS POINT'S FLASH CODE VIA A SERIAL CONNECTION

This README file describes how to upgrade the Access Point's flash code
version from 1.3-B18 or earlier to the most recent version, 1.4-B5,
using an RS-232 serial connection.

There are several methods available to download the new image file to the
Access Point. To download the image to the Access Point on the network,
either send the file from an FTP or TFTP server on your network. Alternatively,
you may send the file over a null modem cable using a terminal emulation program
following the directions below. If you are using a model 7520 or 7521 Access Point,
once the new image is loaded on one of your Access Points, you can send it to the
other Access Points from the updated Access Point. Refer to the RangeLAN2 Access
Point User's Guide for additional information on this feature.

Follow the steps below to download the new image to a RangeLAN2 Access Point
using a null modem cable and a terminal emulation program, such as HyperTerminal
which comes pre-installed as an accessory to Windows 95, 98, and NT.

1. Download the file 10IMAGE.EXE (for model 7510 Access Points) or 20IMAGE.EXE
(for model 7520 or 7521 Access Points) from the Proxim Support web site at
http://www.proxim.com/support/ to a folder on a PC's hard drive or to a diskette.

2. 10IMAGE.EXE and 20IMAGE.EXE are self-extracting files. For model 7510 Access
Points, double-click 10IMAGE.EXE to extract out BM1-4B5.IMG, which is the image
file that needs to be uploaded to the Access Point. For model 7520 or 7521 Access
Points, double-click 20IMAGE.EXE to extract out FF1-4B5.IMG, which is the image
file that needs to be uploaded to the Access Point.

3. Connect one end of a null modem cable to the Access Point and the other end
to a PC. A null modem cable is an RS-232 serial cable that has the transmit and
receive pins crossed. Most electronic stores sell null modem cables.

4. Open a terminal emulation program, such as HyperTerminal, and create a session
using the following settings:

Connect: Direct to COM port # (use the COM port number that corresponds to the port
that the cable is connected to, typically COM1 or COM2)
Baud Rate: 9600
Data bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control: None

5. Press <Enter> to call up the AP's configuration menu.

6. Choose Option 4, the Download Menu.

7. Choose Option 1, Download Image Using XMODEM.

8. At this point, a series of "C"s will appear on the terminal screen.
Go to the terminal program's Transfer menu and choose the "Send File" option.

9. Browse the location of BM1-4B5.IMG (for the 7510) or FF1-4B5.IMG (for the
7520 and 7521) and configure the protocol type to "XMODEM." Hit <Send> to
begin the transfer.

The transfer will take between 10 and 15 minutes.
The Access Point will reboot itself following the download and will report
"Initialization Complete" when it ready for use. You should then confirm that the
flash code version is now BM 1.4-B5 (for a 7510) or FF 1.4-B5 (for a 7520 or 7521).
The flash code version is reported within the Access Point's Diagnostics Menu when
connected via serial or telnet and it is also reported under the System Information
heading within the RangeLAN2 Manager web browser tool that is available with model
7520 and 7521 Access Points.
