README.TXT Driver File Contents (usdrives.exe)

To run your IDE CD-ROM Drive in DOS or Windows 95 Command Prompt Mode
requires two files:

1.      USDIDE.SYS      (Included in this self-extracting file)
2. MSCDEX.EXE (The MicroSoft CD-rom EXtensions file distributed
                         by Microsoft with DOS or Windows 95)

For the CD-ROM to work, there must be a line in your CONFIG.SYS file that
loads the CD-ROM driver:

############  CONFIG.SYS FILE  ##########################################

device=c:\usd48x\usdide.sys /d:cdrom

############  CONFIG.SYS FILE  ##########################################

*In the example above the word "path" would be replaced by the directory
where USDIDE.SYS is located. If USDIDE.SYS is in the root directory,
the line would read: device=c:\usdide.sys /d:cdrom

Next, your AUTOEXEC.BAT must contain a line that loads Microsoft's CD-ROM
Extensions file, MSCDEX.EXE

############  AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE  ########################################

c:\windows\command\mscdex /d:cdrom

############  AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE  ########################################

*In the example above the word "path" would be replaced by the directory
where MSCDEX.EXE is located. If MSCDEX.EXE is in the root directory,
the line would read: c:\mscdex /d:cdrom

On systems with MS-DOS installed, the MSCDEX.EXE file would reside in the
c:\dos directory. On systems with Windows 95 installed, the file MSCDEX.EXE
would reside in the c:\windows\command directory.

If you are working with a new or freshly formatted hard drive, you could
make a boot diskette that would enable you to read the CD-ROM in order
to install Windows 95, or another Operating System. To do so, follow
these steps:

1. Make a boot diskette from a working MS-DOS or Windows 95 system by
typing:

format a: /s        (MS-DOS)    or

clicking on the floppy drive under "My Computer" with the RIGHT mouse button,
and selecting Quick Format / Copy System Files. (Windows 95)

2. Copy the MSCDEX.EXE file from the DOS directory (MS-DOS) or the
c:\windows\command directory (Windows 95) to the floppy diskette.

3. Copy the USDIDE.SYS file from the directory where the file USDIDE.EXE
was extracted to the floppy diskette.

4. Create the CONFIG.SYS file by typing the following at a command prompt:

copy con a:\config.sys        <enter>
device=usdide.sys /d:cdrom    <enter>
<ctrl><z> (press the CTRL and Z keys at the same time)
<enter>

You should see the message "One file copied"

5. Create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file by typing the following at a command prompt:

copy con a:\autoexec.bat      <enter>
mscdex /d:cdrom    <enter>
<ctrl><z> (press the CTRL and Z keys at the same time)
<enter>

You should see the message "One file copied"

The CD-ROM boot diskette is now created. Reboot the system from the A: drive
to gain CD-ROM functionality.
