ÿþIt is strongly recommended to use the Proxim Configuration Utility for the following security types:  

802.1x, WPA, WEP, and No Encryption.





The Proxim Install Package consists of the following:

1.	Network Card Drivers

2.	Proxim Configuration Utility (includes client supplicant)





The Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU) is a client supplicant that has support for 802.1x, WPA, WEP, and No Encryption. 

You can use it to configure your SSID, Security, and other useful wireless card configurations. Please refer to Section 1 

for how to correctly configure your card using the PCU.





There are also other supplicants that you can obtain from other companies. Although it is recommended that you use 

the Proxim Configuration Utility, you may choose to use a different supplicant. Refer to Section 2 & 3. 





It is recommended to remove any old wireless drivers that are currently not being used on the machine. We have seen that

these may cause problems.

Section 1.1

Configuring Profiles

1. Double-Click on the PCU tray icon

2. Click on the "Profile Management" tab.

3. Click "New" or "Modify"

4. Enter a Profile Name.

5. Enter the SSID of the network in SSID1.

6. Click on the "Security" tab



- If you are using 802.1x (TLS):

	- You will need to have already obtained a certificate from the server.

	- Select "802.1x" and EAP type "TLS"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Enter the Server/Domain Name

	- Enter the Login Name

	- Click "OK"



- If you are using 802.1x (PEAP):

	- Select "802.1x" and EAP type "PEAP"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Choose "<Any>" for the Server Properties

	- Enter the User Name and Password

	- Click "Advanced Configuration..."

	- If you did not obtain a certificate from the server:

		- Do NOT check the box "Specific Server or Domain"

	- Check the box "Login Name" and enter the Login Name.

	- Click "OK"

	- Click "OK" again



- If you are using WPA (TLS):

	- You will need to have already obtained a certificate from the server.

	- Select "WPA" and EAP type "TLS"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Enter the Server/Domain Name

	- Enter the Login Name

	- Click "OK"



- If you are using WPA (PEAP):

	- Select "WPA and EAP type "PEAP"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Choose "<Any>" for the Server Properties

	- Enter the User Name and Password

	- Click "Advanced Configuration..."

	- If you did not obtain a certificate from the server:

		- Do NOT check the box "Specific Server or Domain"

	- Check the box "Login Name" and enter the Login Name.

	- Click "OK"

	- Click "OK" again



- If you are using WPA-PSK:

	- Select "WPA-PSK"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Enter the WPA Passphrase.

	- Click "OK"



- If you are using WEP:

	- Select "Pre-Shared Key"

	- Click "Configure"

	- Enter WEP Keys

	- Click "OK"



- If you are using No Encryption:

	- Select "None"



7. Click "OK"

8. Activate your new profile

Section 2.1

Switching between Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU) and Microsoft Wireless Configuration under Windows 2000

***************************************************************************************************************



The Microsoft Wireless Configuration that comes with Service Pack 4 currently can only be used to configure 

802.1x Authentication. It cannot configure the SSID or Pre-Shared Keys (WEP) or WPA. Using Microsoft Wireless Configuration 

will be inconvenient if you need to switch between networks, such as using your computer both at home and at work.



Upon installation or upgrade, the Proxim Configuration Utility will disable the Microsoft Wireless Configuration. 

Every time you reboot your computer, the Microsoft Wireless Configuration may be disabled and you may need to re-enable it.

Steps to use Windows 2000 Microsoft Wireless Configuration after installing Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU) for 

802.1x Authentication:

***************************************************************************************************************



1. Open the PCU and Configure your profile to the correct SSID and Security Type:

	- Double-Click on the PCU tray icon.

	- Click on the "Profile Management" tab.

	- Click "New"

	- Enter a Profile Name.

	- Enter the SSID of the network in SSID1.

	- Click on the "Security" tab

	- Do NOT Select "None" for security type

	- If you are using 802.1x (TLS):

		- Select "802.1x" and EAP type "TLS"

	- If you are using 802.1x (PEAP):

		- Select "802.1x and EAP type "PEAP"

	- Do NOT click on "Configure" or change any other security settings

	- Click "OK"

	- Activate your new profile



2. Start Windows Configuration Service:

	- Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel

	- Open "Administrative Tools"

	- Open "Services"

	- Open "Wireless Configuration"

	- Set Startup Type to "Automatic"

	- Click "Start"

	- Click "OK"



3. Configure the Wireless Configuration:

	- Start Menu -> Settings ->Network and Dial-up Connections

	- Open the "Properties" of the connection that matches your device

	- Click on the "Authentication" tab



	- If you are using TLS:

		- You will need to have already obtained a certificate from the server.

		- Select "Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X"

		- Set EAP type to "Smart Card or other Certificate"

		- Click on "Properties"

		- Select "Use a certificate on this computer"



	- If you are using PEAP:

		- Select "Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X"

		- Set EAP type to "Protected EAP (PEAP)"

		- If you did not obtain a certificate from the server:

			- Do NOT select "Validate Server Certificate"

		- Click "Configure", near the bottom right corner.

		- If your Authentication User Name, Password, or Domain is different from your Windows Logon or 

                  Domain settings, do NOT check "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."

Troubleshooting:

****************

1. Make sure that the Microsoft Wireless Configuration Service is started. Refer to Step 2. When you reboot your computer, 

   the Microsoft Wireless Configuration may be disabled. You may need to start the service again (Step 2) after each reboot.



2. If you want to change the SSID of your network, you will need to configure it in the PCU:

	- Double-Click on the PCU tray icon.

	- Click on the "Profile Management" tab

	- Select the current profile and click "Modify"

	- Change the SSID.

	-Click "OK"



3. On the PCU, make sure that 802.1x security is selected in the current profile and NOT "None"



4. On the PCU, make sure that you have entered the correct SSID of your network in the current profile.



5. 802.1x (PEAP) - If you do not have a certificate from the server, make sure that you do NOT select 

   "Validate Server Certificate".



6. 802.1x (PEAP) - If your PEAP login name, password, and domain is different from your Windows logon name, password, 

   or domain, then make sure that you do NOT check the box that says "Automatically use my Windows logon name 

   and password (and domain if any)."

Steps to Switch back to use the Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU) for all security types.

(Switching from Microsoft Wireless Configuration to PCU)

1. Stop Windows Configuration Service:

	- Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel

	- Open "Administrative Tools"

	- Open "Services"

	- Open "Wireless Configuration"

	- Set Startup Type to "Manual"

	- Click "Stop"

	- Click "OK"

2. Reboot Computer

3. Open the PCU and configure your profile to the correct SSID and Security Type:

	- Refer to Section 1.1 on how to configure profiles in the PCU.

Troubleshooting:

****************

1. Make sure that the Microsoft Wireless Configuration Service is stopped and set to manual.

2. If you are using a security method, follow the directions in Section 1.1 carefully.

Section 2.2

Using other supplicants such as the Funk Odyssey Client under Windows 2000

***************************************************************************************************************



The Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU) and other Client Supplicants cannot be running at the same time. If you choose to use

a different supplicant, you should only install the Proxim Drivers and not the PCU.



If you have already installed the PCU by running the Proxim Install, then you will need to uninstall it first.

Steps to Uninstall the Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU):

***************************************************************************************************************



1. Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel

2. Open "Add/Remove Programs"

3. Select "ORiNOCO 802.11 Wireless Client"

4. Click "Change/Remove"

5. When the InstallShield Wizard pops up, select "Remove" and click "Next"

6. Click "Finish"

7. Reboot Computer.

8. The Found New Hardware Wizard should start upon reboot. Please follow the steps to install Proxim Drivers only.

Steps to Install Proxim Drivers only:

***************************************************************************************************************



1.  Insert the Proxim Install CD into your computer or download the files onto your hard drive if you have not 

        already done so.

        - If the InstallShield Wizard pops up, click "Cancel" and then "Yes" to the warning message

2.  If the device has not already been inserted, insert now.

        - If you have a PCI Adapter, make sure you turn off the computer before inserting

3.  The Found New Hardware Wizard should start

        - If the Wizard does not start, try rebooting your computer

        - If it still does not start, check to see if the card is already installed. Refer to Steps to 

        Upgrade Proxim Drivers.

4.  Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)" and click "Next"

5.  Only select "Specify a location" and uncheck all other boxes, then click "Next"

6.  Click "Browse" and select the CD drive if you have the CD or find the folder you downloaded the software to. 

        Select the folder "Win2k", then click "Open".

7.  Click "OK"

	- If Windows does not find the driver, make sure that the path you chose was correct.

8.  The wizard found a driver for the device, click "Next"

9.  Windows has finished installing the software for this device, click "Finish"

10. The drivers have successfully been installed. You can now start using your other supplicant.

Steps to Upgrade Proxim Drivers only:

1.  Insert the Proxim Install CD into your computer or download the files onto your hard drive if you have not 

        already done so.

        - If the InstallShield Wizard pops up, click "Cancel" and then "Yes" to the warning message

2.  Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel

3.  Open "System"

4.  Click on the "Hardware" tab

5.  Click on "Device Manger"

6.  Find your ORiNOCO device under the "Network Adapters" and Double-Click on it

7.  Click on the "Drivers" tab

8.  Click on "Update Driver"

9.  The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard pops up, click "Next"

10. Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)" and click "Next"

11. Only select "Specify a location" and uncheck all other boxes, then click "Next"

12. Click "Browse" and select the CD drive if you have the CD or find the folder you downloaded the software to. 

        Select the folder "Win2k", then click "Open".

13. Click "OK"

        - If Windows does not find the driver, make sure that the path you chose was correct.

14. The wizard found a driver for the device, click "Next"

15. Windows has finished installing the software for this device, click "Finish"

16. Check to see that the Driver Version is 2.4.2.17 or higher, then click "Close"

        - If the version number is not the version you want it to be, you may need to uninstall the drivers first and then 

        install the drivers again.

17. You can now start using your other supplicant.

Section 3.1

Steps to use Microsoft Wireless Network Connection after installing Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU)

***************************************************************************************************************



Upon installation or upgrade, Proxim Configuration Utility will disable Microsoft Wireless Network Connection under 

Windows XP. 



If you choose to use Microsoft Wireless Network Connection rather than PCU, you should only install the Proxim Drivers 

and not the PCU.



If you have already installed the PCU by running the Proxim Install, then you will need to uninstall it first.



For instructions on how to disable the Proxim Configuration Utility and install or upgrade the Proxim drivers only refer 

to Section 3.3.

Troubleshooting:

In the case of a connection problem be sure that "Wireless Zero Configuration" is started. If it is not:

1. Start "Wireless Zero Configuration" Service:

	- Start Menu->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

	- Double click  "Wireless Zero Configuration" service

	- Set "Startup Type" field to "Automatic"

	- Click "Start" button

	- Click "OK"



2. Reboot computer

Section 3.2

Using other supplicants such as the Funk Odyssey Client under Windows XP

***************************************************************************************************************



Proxim Configuration Utility and other supplicants, such as Funk Odyssey Client, must not be enabled concurrently. 

If you choose to use other supplicants, such as Funk Odyssey Client, you should only install the Proxim Drivers and 

not the PCU.



If you have already installed the PCU by running the Proxim Install, then you will need to uninstall it first.



For instructions on how to disable the Proxim Configuration Utility and install or upgrade the Proxim drivers only 

refer to Section 3.3

Steps to Uninstall the Proxim Configuration Utility (PCU):

1. Start Menu -> Control Panel

2. Open "Add or Remove Programs"

3. Select "ORiNOCO 802.11 Wireless Client"

4.  Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)"and click "Next"

5.  Select the correct driver if multiple options are provided by the "Found New Hardware Wizard" and 

        click "Next" button. This will result in driver s installation after which pressing "Finish" button will complete 

        the process.

6.  If the driver that you need to install is not on the list provided by "Found New Hardware Wizard" go back to the 

        first screen of "Found New Hardware Wizard" and select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and 

        click "Next" button

7.  Provide the path to the driver and click "Next" button. This will result in the driver s installation after 

        which pressing the "Finish" button completes the process.

        - If Windows does not find the driver, make sure that the path you chose was correct.

8.  The driver has successfully been installed. You can now start using your other supplicant.

Steps to Upgrade Proxim Drivers only:

1.  Insert the Proxim Install CD into your computer or download the files onto your hard drive if you have not 

        already done so.

        - If the InstallShield Wizard pops up, click "Cancel" and then "Yes" to the warning message

2.  Start Menu -> Control Panel

3.  Open "System"

4.  Click on the "Hardware" tab

5.  Click on "Device Manger"

6.  Find your ORiNOCO device under the "Network Adapters" and Double-Click on it

7.  Click on the "Driver" tab

8.  Click on "Update Driver" which will bring the "Found new Hardware Wizard"

9.  Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)"and click "Next"

10. Select the correct driver if multiple options are provided by the "Found New Hardware Wizard" and 

        click the "Next" button. This will result in driver installation after which pressing "Finish" button will complete 

        the process.

11. If the driver that you need to install in not on the list provided by "Found New Hardware Wizard" go back to

        - If the version number is not the version you want it to be, you may need to uninstall the drivers first and 

        then install the drivers again.

14. You can now start using your other supplicant.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
