ARTIST 2000 Series - PCI Dual Screen Operation

November 12, 1996

************************************************************************

Dual screen operation of PCI-bus ARTIST 2000 Series Graphic Controllers
(where in DOS another graphic controller is used for the TEXT/VGA screen
and ARTIST 2000 is used for high-resolution display only) fails in some
systems. The symptom is that INTRO reports that no ARTIST board was found
in the system.

When the ARTIST 2000 is the only display controller in the system, the
system automatically maps the ARTIST 2000 into the memory space reserved
for VGA display.

However, when the ARTIST 2000 is used in high resolution only, the
system tries to map the controller into another memory space. If
you installed your ARTIST 2000, created a valid SET 3GA= statement,
restarted your system, and found that the ARTIST 2000 is not recognized
when you run INTRO, check that you installed a jumper across the two
pins of header J2 or J3 (depending on your ARTIST 2000 model) to disable
onboard VGA. If the jumper is correctly situated, you may need to do
some additional system setup.

The new version of INTRO.EXE, Version 1.2, (executable dated 11/15/95)
allows you to see where the ARTIST 2000 is mapped into system memory
when it is run as the second controller in the system. To do so, start
INTRO and select View Settings. If the ARTIST 2000 is successfully
mapped into system memory, the memory address where it is mapped is
shown.

In some systems, a portion of system SHADOW MEMORY must be excluded
or disabled to reserve space for the ARTIST 2000. This is usually
accomplished in a SYSTEM CONFIGURATION program supplied with your
computer.

If you are using a memory manager (such as EMM386), you must reserve
the same space from use by the memory manager (even if you didn't have
to exclude system SHADOW MEMORY in some other fashion). This is usually
accomplished with an X= parameter in the memory manager load statement.

Some computers do not allow mapping of devices below 1 MB in system
memory. If this is the case with your system, INTRO displays message
alerting you to this problem when you View Current Settings.

If you have such a system, you must use the utility program MAP3GA.EXE
to manually create a space in the system BIOS for the ARTIST 2000 BIOS
to be loaded. The syntax for this program is:

    MAP3GA (address)

where (address) is replaced by an actual system address. The address
space must be reserved on an 8K boundary. The usual address location to
try is C800. The command would look like this:

    MAP3GA C800

If you don't have a monochrome card installed in the system, the
location B000 may also work. Try running the MAP3GA utility and then
run INTRO again. If a valid address mapping is reported, add the MAP3GA
command to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that program runs at every system
start. Be sure to include the path if MAP3GA is not located in the root
directory and include the valid address. You must also exclude the same
memory location from any memory managers that are installed.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
