PROCEDURE FOR UPDATING OR REPLACING MODEM INSTRUCTION SET 01.07.98
==================================================================

The instruction set that controls the operation of this modem is stored in a 
modem memory area called "flash memory".  Flash memory can be upgraded by the
modem owner.

The 56Kbps operating instruction set was loaded into flash memory at the 
factory using an "NCI1021B.bin file.

If your telephone lines do not reliably support download operation at greater
than 33.6Kbps, or do not connect reliably, you should replace that default
instruction set by loading the contents of the V.34 "NCI1010G.BIN" file
found on the 56K backup disk.  This will limit your connect speeds to
33.6Kbps.

If you want to update the modem's instruction set to a later version, you 
should replace the contents of flash memory by loading an updated file 
obtained from our bulletin board or web site.

If you must restore the instruction set to its original default 56K state, 
you should reload file "NCI1021B.bin" found on the 56K backup disk.

If your modem fails to operate because flash memory is corrupted, you should 
reload the contents of "NCI1021B.bin" or "NCI1010G.BIN" file into flash 
memory to correct the problem.

If this happens on a Windows 95 plug and play system, see the special 
procedure at end of this document.

Follow the appropriate instructions below when you need to load a new or 
replacement set of instructions to flash memory.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS95 PLUG AND PLAY SYSTEMS:
=================================================

If you do not know which COM port the modem is using, double click MY 
COMPUTER, CONTROL PANEL, and MODEMS.  Highlight "56KifxC Internal Modem" 
and click PROPERTIES (the first tab).  Because all COM ports are listed, 
be sure to locate and remember the COM port number for the modem.

1.  Insert the "56K Backup Disk" in floppy drive A: (or B:).
2.  Click START, Programs, and MS-DOS Prompt
3.  At the C:\> prompt, type:
        A: <Enter> (or B:)
4.  Do one of the following (a, b, or c):

     a. If you cannot download at greater than 33.6Kbps, type the following 
	at the A:\> prompt:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn  NCI1010G.BIN <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

     b. To reload default 56Kbps operation, type the following at the A:\> 
	prompt:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn  NCI1021B.bin <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

     c. If you wish to load upgrade instructions from BBS or web site, type 
	this at the A:\> prompt:
        LOADER  -mamd -Cn  PATH\xxxxxxxx.BIN <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port; "PATH|" 
	is the disk drive and sub-directory where you down loaded the 
	xxxxxxxx.BIN file; "x's" = downloaded file name)

5.  The system provides a status of the copying process.  If you get the 
    message "No difference between ... ", the load process completed 
    successfully.  Continue with Step 6.  However, if there is a scrolling 
    list of messages saying there is a difference between a flash memory 
    address and memory, the load process failed.  Usually, the reason is 
    that the COMM port number entered for -Cn is incorrect.  Verify the 
    correct value for n (1, 2, 3, or 4) and re-enter the command.  If this 
    still does not work and you have a Windows 95 plug and play system, try 
    to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode (click START, SHUT DOWN, and 
    RESTART THE COMPUTER IN MS-DOS MODE.  If this fails, follow the 
    procedure at the end of this document.  If nothing works, call Tech 
    Support.

6.  Type EXIT <Enter> to return to Windows 95.

7.  Reinstall the new modem code as follows: Click START, SETTINGS, CONTROL 
    PANEL.  In Control Panel, click DEVICE MANAGER, double click MODEMS, 
    select "56kifxC" or installed modem and click REMOVE.  Click REFRESH 
    and select the correct modem if asked.  If Windows 95 asks for an 
    installation floppy and you have changed the modem to V.34, use the 
    56K backup floppy instead of the Quick Link floppy.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 3.X/DOS NON-PLUG AND PLAY SYSTEMS:

1.  Insert the "56K Backup Disk" in floppy drive A: (or B:).
2.  Completely exit Windows to the DOS prompt.
3.  At the hard drive's DOS prompt (e.g. C:\>) type:
        A: <Enter> (or B:)
4.  Do one of the following (a, b, or c):

     a. If you cannot download at greater than 33.6Kbps, type the 
	following at the A:\> prompt:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn NCI1010G.BIN <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

     b. To reload default 56Kbps operation, type the following at the A:\> 
	prompt:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn NCI1021B.bin <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

     c. If you wish to load upgrade instructions from BBS or web site, type 
	this at the A:\> prompt:
        LOADER -Cn PATH\xxxxxxxx.BIN <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port; "PATH|"
        is the disk drive and sub-directory where you down loaded the

6.  Type WIN to return to Windows 3.x or reboot your system.

SPECIAL PROCEDURE - MODEM FAILURE
WINDOWS 95 PLUG AND PLAY INSTALLATONS
=================================================================
This special procedure is for users who installed the modem in a
Window 95 Plug and Play system using the factory default jumpers (pins
1 thru 10). If an "Unrecognized Device Detected" message pertaining to
the modem displays when you powered up the computer, or if Windows 95 no
longer recognizes the modem, then flash memory will have to be reloaded in
a special way as follows:

Note: Refer to your Modem Manual when performing this procedure.

1. Turn off the computer and remove the modem.
2. Remove and retain the 10 jumpers from the modem jumper block.
3. Reconfigure the modem jumper block by placing a jumper on pins that 
   correspond to the COM port and IRQ setting that Windows 95 used for this 
   modem. (E.G., COM 3, IRQ 5). 
4. Reinstall the modem in the computer.
5. Turn on the computer.  When the message STARTING WINDOWS 95 displays, key 
   F8.  From the resulting menu, select COMMAND PROMPT ONLY.
6. Insert the "56K Backup Disk" in floppy drive A: (or B:).
7. At the hard drive's DOS prompt (e.g. C:\>) type:
        A: <Enter> (or B:)
8. Do one of the following (a or b):

     a. Type the following at the A:\> prompt to reload V.34 code:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn NCI1010G.BIN <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

     b. Type the following at the A:\> prompt: to reload 56K code:
         LOADER -mamd -Cn NCI1021B.bin <Enter> ("n"=modem COM port number)

9. The system provides a status of the copying process.  If the load 
   process fails, you may need to jumper the modem to a different COMM
   port number.  Try COMM port 3 or 4 and repeat Step 8.  If all these
   fail, call Tech Support.
10. Turn off the computer and remove the modem.
11. Put the 10 jumpers on pins 1 through 10 (plug and play default).
12. Re-install the modem card in the computer and re-boot the system.
13. Refer to the Modem Manual and perform the "Windows 95 Setup" for plug 
    and play systems.
